L PROBERT - Cardiff v Leicester
DIR By: TheThingFromLewes

Given the recent tragic events the last thing needed was a
performance which was frankly garbage of the highest order from
an official who you would expect to have the best empathy in the
top flight.
Gray’s booking was pathetic in the shadow of what’s happened,
and how on earth Leicester weren’t awarded a penalty after
Bamba’s blatant handball that sent the shot onto the bar.
A few other decisions were really odd. As I said Probert is one
of the best in terms of his nature with players, but today was
not what was required.

I personally don’t think Lee can do anything else with the Gray
caution. People forever bemoan officials for the lack of
consistency so, irrespective of the tragic events, I think Mr
Probert had little choice but to do his job - officials can’t
pick and choose when to apply the laws of the game.

I was a bit surprised Probert showed a yellow card because I
remember him being the referee when Gary Cahill took his shirt
off to display a message of support to Fabrice Muama after his
collapse (against Leicester if I remember rightly?) and Probert
did not show a yellow card, and was widely praised for his
empathy and compassion.
Darren Deadman also did not show a yellow card when Billy Sharp
(I think) displayed a tribute message after the recent death of
his child and was again praised on here.

Agree, I was thrilled that probert was given this game but how
he messed it up and has gone down very much imo .

I suspect this was discussed at the Ivory Towers & he was told
to book even in the circumstances. Yes it's emotive and yes it
would have been a lovely gesture for him to turn a blind eye but
then 5 mins later it's back to slating the refs saying they
can't pick & choose which Laws to apply and they must be
consistent - so which is it? They can pick & choose when we
think it's worthy of them doing so but can't when we don't? What
if a different player had lifted his shirt with a tribute to his
family who had died in the Indonesian plane crash - should he
have been booked or not? How about if one had "lest we forget &
a big poppy" - booking yes or no? Where does it stop? Who gets
to decide which messages are ok and that the LOTG can be ignored
for those and which can't? A referee should never be made to
feel wrong for correctly applying the LOTG no matter how emotive
the circumstances.

Given how exceptionally traumatic it's been not only for a
football team, it's also affected a lot of local people and the
wider communities. It seems the Leicester owner has done
substantial good service to the Leicester area and I do think a
modicum of common sense and empathy would have been appropriate
in this circumstance. It's not everyday this kind of incident
transpires.
If Riley and co have said they had given Probert instructions to
card anything like that, then they should carry the can for
doing so, distastefully I might add.

Fully agree with this-I’m sure the player will accept the
caution woth good grace-I suppose all the Leicester players had
similar tee shirts on in case they scored and would have known
the consequences- a player SHALL be cautioned for removing his
shirt-don’t blame the ref

Out of interest, I looked back at the thread on the old forum
regarding the Billy Sharp caution and it was interesting to say
you had gained more respect for the referee for showing that
referees were human -
HTML https://www.tapatalk.com/groups/ratetheref/doncaster-vs-middlesbrough-t6255.html
Equally, BMB commented 'I think it's one of those common sense
decisions to let it slide, it's hardly the biggest of offences.
Personally I think Lee Probert was right to turn a blind eye on
this occasion' when Lee Probert chose not to caution Cahill for
his support for Fabrice Muamba in March 2012 -
HTML https://www.tapatalk.com/groups/ratetheref/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=6567&p=79791&hilit=Gary+Cahill#p79791
Generally I would probably echo the sentiments of both threads.
I would not criticise Lee Probert for his decision today.
However, when I was hearing the broadcasters question whether or
not Probert was going to caution Gray or not I was fully expect
him to choose not to considering precedents set previously.
I'm not sure it benefited football or refereeing too much that
Probert chose to caution.

I'd have preferred the common sense approach myself but my
personal view is the decision was made higher, well before the
game. A line does have to be drawn somewhere and I think the
powers that be drew it today, or where does it stop, when does
it become acceptable to pick & choose & when doesn't it? It's
one of those decisions damned if you do, damned if you don't.
People want consistency, people want the LOTG applied correctly
and equally and then slate a referee when he applies them
correctly. That's what I have the problem with. He is being
slated for giving the correct decision, a mandatory decision
under the LOTG, not an in the opinion of decision a mandatory
one and whether you, I or anyone else agrees or not with his
decision, in Law it was 100% correct and NO referee under any
circumstances, however tragic they are, should be given grief
for making a correct decision. To be described as garbage by
TTFL for making a CORRECT IN LAW decision is quite frankly
garbage on the part of the poster, not the referee, Nick says he
messed it up, well no he did not - he made the CORRECT DECISION
IN LAW. A mandatory decision.

I don’t think Mr Probert would have been slated by anyone with a
heart, had he chosen not to caution today. Perhaps Mike Riley
should be asked directly if explicit orders were given to
caution in this scenario. So long as the shirt exposed doesn’t
have a political or offensive message, I’d be happy to see the
law about removing shirts scrapped.
