NBI season 2021/22
By: bmb Date: June 26, 2021, 2:23 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
The new season kicks off on 31st July. The fixtures are out,
I've just finished adding them all to the website.
There are 12 teams and the season lasts for 33 games. Each team
plays each other 3 times. The normal home and away tie but the
3rd game is no longer determined as being home/away by league
position in the previous year. The Federation did not state at
the AGM how it would be determined though and I really can't be
bothered to study the fixtures list to see if there is a pattern
to the 3rd games!
The bottom 2 teams will be demoted to the NBII.
If 2 teams end up on the same number of points the position is
decided in this order:
1. number of wins
2. goal difference
3. goals scored
4. points gathered against each other
5. goal difference against each other
6. away goals against each other
7. better fair play position in the league
8. random draw
European places:
The league Champions go into the Champions League qualifying
stage.
2nd place, 3rd place & the winners of the Magyar Kupa go into
the Europa League conference league. If the team who win the
Magyar Kupa also finish in one of the top 3 spots then whoever
finishes 4th will take the final Europa League spot.
In the Magyar Kupa:
In the early rounds of the cup games the lower division team is
always at home. When the draw is made, they don't do it 1st team
out of the hat is at home and 2nd away, instead they get the
pairing of teams and then the lower division team are made the
home team and if the teams are in the same division then the 1st
out of the hat is at home. This is for 2 main reasons, firstly
the home team gets the revenue so it's a way to ensure any
monies made go to the lower division team, who like here, need
it more than the bigger clubs but it's also the Federations way
to encourage supporters to go along to non league and lower
division grounds. Nice way to do it, imo. The latter stages of
the cup are 2 legged (from round 9-11) so each team gets a home
& away tie.
There are 12 rounds in total. The NBI clubs join in from Round
6. The most important rounds are Round 9 - the last 16, Round 10
- quarterfinals and Round 11 - semi finals. The final reverts
back to a single leg and is played at the National Team Stadium.
The away goal rule comes into play during Rounds 9-11. A game
will only go to extra time/penalties if both teams have the same
number of away goals. Throws me every year!!
NBI referees don't typically referee any matches until Round 9,
the earlier rounds are normally handled by the NBII & NBIII
referees. here has been no word from the MLSZ if VAR will be
used in the Magyar Kupa - AARs were used from Round 9 onwards in
previous years so if VAR is used then it will be from round 9
onwards I expect.
In general
They structure the leagues so that each tier of the game kicks
off on different days/times. You could across a weekend go to a
non-league game, NBI, NBII & NBIII game with no clash of kick
off times etc The lower league teams (NBIII & below) never have
evening games because they don't have floodlights. A lot of the
grounds are literally a field - it's great!
VAR
VAR will be implemented from this season. All NBI and NBII
referees, who acted as AAR in the NBI, have now done the VAR
course or will have done it by the start of the season - the
final course running this weekend. We do not have a dedicated
unit set up at Kanai Utca (where the MLSZ is based), we will be
using the mobile units with specially kitted out vans. We have 3
of them. No word on where they will be stationed for each match,
I would assume the car park of the home team so they can tap
directly into the internet there as the internet is not perhaps
as strong and reliable as in the UK for example. There is an
article here, in English:
HTML https://www.hungarianfootball.com/2021/06/27/var-confirmed-for-the-upcoming-nbi-season/
Please note the lovely Mr Solymosi even wore red for the
training! There is a man well trained [emoji6]
Referee Committee
We have a newly appointed referee committee from 1 July 2021 to
30 June 2025
Berzi Sándor (Chairman)
Gaál Gyöngyi Krisztina
Hanacsek Attila
Juhos Attila
Kurmai Zoltán <---- new appointment
Piller Sándor
Szarka Zoltán
Tóth Vencel <---- takes over Mr Puhl's role. He took it over
on a temporary basis while Mr Puhl was in hospital.
This will be the first season in about 40 years with no Mr Puhl.
That will take some getting used to. I didn't always agree with
him, we didn't always like each other very much either but I
always had a huge amount of respect for him and his many
achievements in and contributions to refereeing. I believe there
will be 1 mins silence/applause for him at every match in round
1. I hope to be in Hungary for that weekend.
Happy bmb is very happy as the lovely Mr Solymosi is confirmed
as continuing until at least December!

It would seem that the MLSZ are not going to be publishing who
is acting as VAR/AVAR or VRO for games, the official website
still shows AAR’s so it seems no-one has got around to updating
it regarding the changes. There again as they forgot to update
the competition rules to include VARs, until a panicked urgent
update in the past 24 hours, this comes as no surprise!!

Re: NBI season 2021/22
By: bmb Date: July 31, 2021, 12:03 am
---------------------------------------------------------
Just a review of how our first 2 VAR games went (if you have
read the article I linked to on the general discussion board
this is taken from it)
In the first game – Paks v Mezőkövesd Zsóry, Berke Balázs
was referee and has some VAR experience in UEFA matches. In this
match the VAR was very smooth and intervention/disruption was
minimal. VAR intervened at 45+5 with a penalty subsequently
being awarded from a missed indent during a corner. Although all
5 goals were automatically reviewed only the 5th goal, was
reviewed noticeably. It was an excellent introduction and was on
par with how VAR worked at the Euros. If we can set this as the
standard in Hungary then I don’t think anyone will have any
complaints. Well done Berke Balázs and the VAR.
In the second game – Gyirmót FC Győr v MTK Budapest, it was
not as smooth. Rookie referee Zierkelbach Péter was the on-field
referee. This was his first live match with VAR. To be fair to
Zierkelbach Péter he had other significant issues in the game
with the floodlights failing and causing several delays. Several
times during the game there were only two floodlights working
fully, one not working at all and one on about half light to
what it should have been and at one point none were working and
a drinks break occurred during that period to help lessen the
delays. It appeared to be a local issue as the apartments behind
the ground had no lights either although street lights seemed to
be working. In VAR terms in the 36th minute there was a VAR
review for a possible red card, following the review the
original yellow card stood. In the 54th minute there was a VAR
goal review for possible handball. The goal stood there was no
handball offence as outlined in the Laws of the Game. In the
88th minute there was a review for a possible red card, this one
took a while (2-3 mins). Following consultation with the VAR,
Zierkelbach Péter carried out an of-field review and determined
that his original decision to issue a yellow card was incorrect
and he withdrew the yellow card and issued a red card. Three
major VAR reviews – two confirmed the original decisions and
one, using an on-field review, corrected a decision from yellow
card to red card. Although not as smooth as in the first game,
it was not hugely interruptive apart from perhaps the on-field
review, however as this prevented an incorrect decision being
made it worked just as it should. Well done Zierkelbach Péter
and the VAR.

Copied over from the general thread
Well I have to say a huge well done to the MLSZ and our match
officials, who did a fantastic job this weekend in respect of
the introduction of VAR. It was very much inline with how it
was used in the Euros and the complete opposite of the farce
that it has been in the PL. It was not used intrusively, the
vast majority of the mandatory reviews on goals were done so
quickly, they were not noticeable. In the 6 games over the
weekend we had 2 draws, 4 away wins, 39 yellow cards + 3 further
YC for managers, 1 YYR, 1 straight red and 3 penalties. As this
is me I'll also mention 3 black shirts, 1 red shirt, 1 blue
shirt and Andó-Szabó Sándor can get to the naughty step...

decisions and one, using an on-field review, corrected a
decision from yellow card to red card.
Ferencváros 1-2 Kisvárda Master Good Referee: Káprály Mihály
(Black) YC: 7; YYR: 0; RC: 0; Pen: 1
77. VAR review possible penalty – on-field review – decision
penalty to Ferencváros
Overall: 1 missed penalty decision corrected
Budapest Honvéd 1-4 DVSC Referee: Bognár Tamás (Blue) YC: 6;
YYR: 1; RC; 0; Pen: 1
56. VAR review – possible penalty for handball – on-field review
– decision penalty. Following the OFR Bognár Tamás also gave
the player who had committed the handball ( Klemenz Lukas
Rafael) a yellow card, which was his 2nd yellow card of the game
& therefore a red.
The goal reviews on all 5 goals were barely noticeable
Overall: 1 missed penalty decision corrected & as a consequence
a 2nd yellow Red card also given that would have been missed.
ZTE 1-1 MOL Fehérvár Referee: Andó-Szabó Sándor (Y****w) YC: 7;
YYR: 0; RC: 0; Pen: 0
69. VAR review on the ZTE goal – decision goal given
Overall: Slight delay (15-20 seconds) on 1 goal with the review,
the other goal the review wasn't noticeable.
I will also mention 44.Serafimov Nikola waved like mad at the
ref for a yellow card to be given and the ref duly obliged and
gave him a yellow card! You love to see it!!
Újpest 1-2 Puskás Akadémia Referee: Pintér Csaba (Red) YC: 7;
YYR: 0; RC: 0; Pen: 0
Overall: 3 goal reviews that were not noticeable. You wouldn't
have even known that VAR was there had they not shown the images
of them in the van at kick off!
Conclusion:
20 mandatory goal reviews - 18 unnoticed 2 a very slight and
insignificant delay
6 non goal VAR reviews - 2 confirmed the original decision
correct, 3 corrected penalties that had been missed (1 via an
OFR that also saw a YYR that would have been missed), 1 yellow
card corrected to a red card (OFR) so 5 decisions corrected, 2
in 1 review.
Not a single set of lines to see if someone had a toenail or
nose hair offside - loved that!
The only real delays were during the 2 on-field reviews and
resulted in incorrect decisions being overturned and corrected.
During the OFR the TV screen split in two and on the right there
was a smaller image of the referee at the pitch side camera and
on the left a bigger image showing the footage that he was
seeing on his screen. The reason for the review was clearly
displayed so you knew what they were looking at and why.
Announcements were also made over the tannoys in the stadiums so
fans inside also knew what the reviews were for. It didn't show
on TV if the images were also being broadcast over the big
screens in the grounds.
That, imo, was a huge success. I had been dreading VAR coming
to my beloved NBI but if it continues to be this unintrusive
then I'm all for it.
