Two things for me - firstly, I think the defender knew exactly
was he was doing, and deliberately moved his arms into a
position where he knew he had a better chance of blocking the
cross. However, whether he knew what he was doing or not is
immaterial in this incident, as the contact is above shoulder
level so under the 20/21 laws it's handball. With the changes to
the laws for next season it would be down to whether the
officials believe it is either deliberate, or if they have made
their body "unnaturally bigger" (i.e. not in a 'natural
position').

Sorry, but while it was clearly a penalty, I can't accept "the
defender knew exactly was he was doing". In that split second
before he dived in to block the cross, are you saying he decided
to put his arms up deliberately?
We all acknowledge referees have split seconds to make
decisions, so this is a case of a player having a split second
to make the challenge. The arms going up are a natural and
instinctive motion (not to mention to aid balance), yet in
footballing terms they then make the body bigger, etc, so it's
clearly a penalty.
I'm more concerned with the nonsense spouted by Jonathan
Woodgate who claimed the ball deflected off his defender's thigh
onto his arms, when it quite clearly didn't.
He also claimed there should have been a "Premier League ref" on
the game. I'm sure one of those would have made exactly the same
decisions as Jarred Gillett.

I concur with everything that has been said here - for me he is
easily the best in SG2 and he should be at the next World Cup in
my opinion. To not have him doing SG1 games is a bit ridiculous.

I was very impressed overall - I agreed with pretty much every
decision, and pleased that he added time on for the time wasting
- as few referees appear to do so. That game could easily have
gone away with him (and indeed, I think a number of SG1 refs may
have lost control of this game), but he kept a lid on it and did
brilliantly well. Based on the importance of the game, and how
difficult it was to referee, that was one of the performances of
the season for me. I despair if Gillett doesn't make it on to
SG1 next year, he is miles ahead of most of his colleagues in
SG2.

I entirely agree with m'learned friend's assessment. Gillett was
a senior international referee operating in the Southern
Hemisphere before his move to England. i suppose it was just
about reasonable to place him at the level of SG2 to see how he
might adapt to the domestic game here, though I do wonder
whether there was a slight case of "our referees are so much
better than other nations" in that decision. Perhaps Gillett
himself felt more comfortable starting at this level at a
slightly lower profile then Premiership officiating. Judging by
his performance in this Play Off second leg, he is more than
ready to step up to SG1 and if he does I think he will soon be
finding himself towards the top of that group. I can see no
reason to hold him back.

I've only seen snippets from the game but what struck me from
the posts above is the number of KMI's he had to deal with. And
it seems there isn't a consensus that he even got one of the
decisions wrong although some will have been more subjective
than others. I doubt there were many PL fixtures last season
with that number of key incidents to adjudicate on, especially
in such a vital game.
Perhaps someone could clarify his FIFA status. He's been on the
list since 2013 apparently and is still only 34. What category
is he and does he remain as Australian listed? Or could he
become one of the English FIFA referees in certain
circumstances?

AFAIK He is no longer a FIFA referee. He did retain his FIFA
status when he first came to England until the end of that year
(2019 I think) but as far as I know you cannot be nominated to
the FIFA list unless you are officiating in the top division of
the country in question so he dropped off the FIFA list at the
end of that year. I can see no reason should he be promoted to
the PL that he cannot be nominated again for the FIFA list.
In terms of his status as a previous FIFA referee, I don't know
how the categories within AFC work but he has officiated AFC
Champions League group games but no KO so I am guessing he was
in their equivalent of the UEFA first group?

Thanks DublinRef for the explanation. It did cross my mind he
may no longer be on the FIFA list but my quick check didn't
reveal anything. We've 1 place available I believe on England's
quota and I guess in theory, Darren England and Jones will
potentially be in the queue for that. At the other end, assuming
normal circumstances and no early retirements etc., Anthony
Taylor at 42 would be the first to come off.
Anyway, if Jared is promoted to SG1, let's see how he performs
in the PL. I certainly wish him well and he's evidently made a
strong impression with RTR contributors.
