In my view, Jared Gillett just refereed two cup finals in one
there.. When you see some of the Select Group officials, it's
baffling how this man is in SG2. That will go down as one of the
best performances of the season. and what a match it was.

As an Aussie watching the game. Jared was excellent. I'm a
Blackburn supporter but wanted Brentford to win. In saying that
all of the big decisions he nailed. Maintained a calm demeanor
and did start flashing cards around when the players were
getting feisty, used his communication skills.
It would be an amazing if he was to be promoted. Question: Would
he be the first 'ex-pat' to be promoted to the Premier League
outside of the UK? (I mean there have been Welsh officials back
in the day).

Having watched the first 80 minutes, I genuinely don’t think any
of our current SG1 group could’ve done better - well done Mr
Gillett, I hope promotion follows!
I also note a word of caution regarding Rob Jones - I understand
the concern, but Gillett has considerable experience in
Australia and on the fifa list which I believe makes him more
likely to settle into PL life when (not if!) the opportunity
arises!

I thought Gillett was absolutely great this afternoon too,
fantastic performance in a pressure cooker. Looks ready to be
given his chance.
Regarding the comparisons with Jones.. personally don’t think
he’s been given a fair crack at SG1 until the last few weeks and
he’s performed well in his last 3 games I’ve seen (Wolves,
Southampton and Newcastle). I think the main issue appears to be
the reluctance of the powers that be to let him loose. Let’s
hope they learn from their mistakes and give the new guys a run
of games earlier on next season…

Top class performance today from gillett, deserves to be
promoted to sg1 on performances this season, today
Was probably his best.

Disappointed with the result, but it was a fair one and
Brentford deserved to progress. Thought our players lost their
cool a fair bit between the penalty and HT. Mepham's mistake
that led to the red card... did he get a shout? He should have
done and should have got rid.
Onto Mr. Gillett. always been impressed with him and I thought
he had an excellent game.. though I do have an issue with the
penalty.
Where was Kelly supposed to have his arms when it's hit at him
at point blank range.. he did try to pull his arms in but they
were in pretty much a natural position given his movement.. It
was extremely harsh and it did change the game, and who knows
how the game would have gone had that not happened when it did.
It may have been given by the assistant, to be fair, given the
delay in giving it.
After that he controlled the game well, though it did get very
difficult sometimes. I suspect some SG refs may well have lost
control of that one.
I wish more refs would deal with timewasting as he did.. seems
he and Michael Oliver are the only ones I can recall getting to
grips with that issue very quickly.

Well said and I do have sympathy about the penalty, however,
this is the way that the modern game has progressed and, even if
the dreaded VAR had been available, I very much doubt that the
decision would have been overturned. Players are going to have
to tape their arms to their sides in future to avoid these
decisions! I know that that is impossible because your arms give
you balance, however, this all seems to have been ignored these
days.

Analysis
Big Decisions
I think that Gillett in PGMOL's eyes had the correct response in
all nine of the big decisions above - well done, that's
excellent in such a challenging game!
My personal views:
15' - correct decision, enlarged his body surface while trying
to block the ball, that's a risk you take in such situations,
penalty is correct
16' - correct two cautions for "adopting an aggressive
attitude"; no VC
28' - clearly correct red card, DOGSO
29' - should be a penalty IMO! Defender impedes the attacker
from shooting by tripping him
38' - more of a foul than not I'd say, defender steps across the
attacker; however, it's crazy to suggest that a penalty would be
appropriate here
43' - there seems to be a small push on the defender, so I'd say
defensive freekick is the most technically correct call;
definitely not a deliberate handling, good play on
+46' - correct play on, legal charge
54' - by the book, that should be a penalty I think! Defender
deliberately puts his leg across the attacker, no attempt to
play the ball, and blocks him from shooting by tripping;
however, defensive freekick is the most sensible call
90' - verrrry close to SFP for me, but given that the trapping
contact isn't too dangerous, I agree with Gillett, caution is
correct
Managing the Game
I agree with the consensus here in this regard - the HUGE
strength of this performance is how calm Jarred Gillett stayed
throughout; as one user correctly stated, the officials were the
only people keeping calm inside the whole stadium! Very
impressive in an extremely challenging Championship game.
I was genuinely quite surprised to see Gillett's gait and
movement style - it was fairly limited for the top level,
relying more on his height in running around (like, say, Deniz
Aytekin) and he was a bit stuck in the centre of the pitch. Only
the most keenly trained eyes would have caught it, but I thought
his foul detection was just slightly shaky for that.
Maybe it was just me, but I didn't think Gillett's choice to
remain strictly in the background was the best choice in the
early stages. The incident at 11' with a small altercation (see
in the folder above) was the perfect moment to issue clear
warnings, and I think the game would have benefitted from a
slightly more rigorous foul selection in these minutes (7', 18'
eg.).
However, the match calmed down as it went along, and the referee
had a hand on it the whole way through. Please don't get me
wrong - very impressive in a 'battle' like this! But, at least
IMO, there is a conversation to be had whether it was the
optimal approach. Anyway, no matter in the end.
Bournemouth ran the gauntlet re. receiving a delaying the
restart caution in the 1H, but in general I thought Gillett
used his munition pretty well in combating this - after the
second through in leave of the half (27'), the referee issued a
clear warning, and the players got the message.
In general, his use of cards was consistent, with a clear line.
Would only add that I would have liked to see a caution at 20'
(deliberate kick), and the striking incident at 64' was a nailed
on reckless striking; missed booking. Offender pulled out at
48', so agree with assessing the tackle as careless.
The caution at 78' should be highlighted as very good
officiating - not a mandatory caution, but blocking the
goalkeeper definitely showed a lack of respect for the game, so
very good that the ref showed the yellow card. It sent a clear
signal to everyone that the ref wasn't going to have the p*ss
taken out of him, and also that he valued fair and fast play.
Well done!
In this CL/EL knockout stage, UEFA have asked the referees to
crackdown on dissent and especially mobbing / crowing the
referee. I wish PGMOL would do the same! Sorry, but it's simply
wrong that you can shout in assistant's face (7') or surround
the referee (15', 43') without being booked. It would definitely
improve the image of the game, and the referees here, and in
most cases it would discourage players from doing it in the
first place!
Assistant Referees
Philip Dermott played a very good onside at 33' in a cross-over
situation, solid work! I think Robert Hyde was correctly to play
the decisive goal onside from a previous phase? Hard to be
certain. Both assistants functioned well as team members in
general, but I do think Dermott missed a clear push in his
vicinity at 7'.
Balance
Cognisant of some doubts, Jarred Gillett refereed this very
challenging game on a highly satisfying level. Despite facing at
least nine(!) 'KMIs', all of his decisions received the wider
acceptance of football people on this afternoon; very
impressive.
If this was a final test for Select Group 1 promotion, then
surely we can say that Gillett passed it.
