       British home championships 1950

       My Grandad attended these games in 1950 as qualifiers for the
       World Cup.
       Matches:
       NI 2-8 Scotland - referee R Mortimer (ENG)
       Wales 1-4 England - referee John Mowatt (Sco)
       Scotland 2-0 Wales - referee S K Law (ENG)
       England 9-2 Ireland - referee Mervyn Griffiths (Wal)
       Wales 0-0 Ireland - referee Reg Leafe (ENG)
       Scotland 0-1 England - referee Reg Leafe (ENG)

       Neutrality I see apart from the Scotland v England game. I
       wonder whether a Scottish ref ever got to referee the S v E
       game. I attended the England v Scotland game in 1961 with my dad
       in what was termed the 'Hapless Haffey' game, when Scotland
       goalie Frank Haffey picked the ball out of the net no less than
       nine times in a 3-9 loss. England scored a 10th but it was
       correctly disallowed for handball against Jimmie Greaves. I have
       a programme tucked away somewhere in the loft, but I do remember
       that the ref was a neutral Frenchman by the name of Du Bois.

       I have a French referee for 1961 but it is Marcel Le Quesne, he
       had French lines too - A. Carette and Raymond Poncin
       They wore red shirts with blue shorts and the match ball was
       lemon
       Scottish refs controlled Scotland v England in Scotland
       1872-1882, 1892 and lastly 1898 when Tom Robertson did it
       Robertson was also the first south of border in 1907, another in
       1913, Tom Dougray then did four in a row 1920-26,
       with another Scot in 1928 and finally George Mitchell in 1951

       Red, blue and lemon. Shouldn’t Mr Carette have been wearing
       orange? 😄

       With the help of the footballfacts.ru web-site I have found the
       linesmen for some of these fixtures.  For two of the games the
       participating countries provided one linesman each, while for
       the other two both linesmen came from England (though I suppose
       Mr Mackay may have had Scottish roots)
       England v N.Ireland: E. Plinston (Warrington) & J.A.A. Murphy
       (N.I.)
       Wales v England: T.L. Davies (Ynyshir) & N.C. Taylor (Westbury)
       Scotland v Wales: J.W. Bowers (Huddersfield) & P.F. Power (York)
       Scotland v England: W.B. Everett (Beccles) & L.A.M. Mackay
       (Fulham)

       Referee for W v NI was Arthur Ellis (not Leafe) but linesmen not
       found, the last "All Ireland" team
       Lines for NI v S were Norman Swindle (yes really) (NI) & W.G.
       Livingstone (SCO)
