Not my favorite referee. But he has had a long career and I wish
him well in his new role as dedicated VAR
Very interesting to see the dedicated VAR officials comment as
from next season. I wonder who will be on that panel or however
it's set up?

Excellent referee in his day, was very good in his domestic
finals including the LC last season. Form tailed off towards the
end of his career.
Good luck next season Lee!

Good Luck to him in his retirement & future role as dedicated
VAR.
Pleased to see the emergence of the role of dedicated VAR. For
me it's a positive step.

Jobs for the boys.
Its looks like the only way they can get 'rid' of anyone with
the contracts they have.

Congratulations to Lee Mason on his retirement. A referee who in
my opinion produced many fine performances over his long PL
career. I like bmb am glad to see the creation of dedicated
VARs. Perhaps this will be an incentive to other referees
approaching the end of their career to step back from on field
duties and allow room for the next generation.
Nonetheless well done Lee, enjoy your last game at OT and best
wishes for the future

He has had a long career and has taken a lot of stick,
particularly during this season, which has been a difficult one
for officials, players, managers and fans. Thaks for the job you
have done over many years.
Good luck with the new job in the VAR environment ---nobody said
that retirement would be enjoyable and the PGMOL are trying to
ensure that it won't be. [emoji1]

Congratulations to Lee Mason on his on field refereeing career.
I was lucky enough to witness his premier league debut at the
Riverside Stadium Middlesbrough.
I thought he had a solid game and went on to referee to a high
standard during his time in the premier league.
Perhaps i remember that debut as villa won 4- 0 and Luke Moore
scored a hat trick.
I saw Lee referee many times after that initial game including
the carabao cup final in which he was a solid performer.
The last few seasons, especially since the first lockdown, lee’s
performances seemed to be on a downward slide from his high
standards, perhaps age, fitness and the covid environment we now
live in have had an effect.
I am sure the comments from a west midlands manager after a game
he refereed didnt help his confidence.
Perhaps the final straw for Lee were the events at the hawthorns
and after a period of reflection whilst recovering from the
injury he picked up in that game he thought the time was right
to bring down the curtain on his career.
I am sure we have all had, during our careers however long, the
thoughts do i really need this anymore?
Good luck to Lee for his finale at Old trafford tomorrow night
and thanks for your service.
It is nice to see referees become dedicated var officials, as
well as the dedicated assistant referees.
Good luck in your next phase of refereeing/retirement Lee.

It makes sense to have recently retired refs as specialist VARs
rather than burdening additional workload onto current refs.
They should roll it out to some of the others who have retired
in the last decade like East etc too.

Having dedicated VARs seems a reasonable strategy to head in for
the long-term. I'm not sure VAR is Lee Mason's strongest aspect
though. He's been involved in some poor VAR decisions this
season, and how many VAR appointments has he had in the last 3
months?
You do wonder about Lee Probert and Roger East and if they
should now be included too.
I'm glad Mason is getting a final PL game tomorrow. He always
seemed a bit inconsistent and sometimes lacking a bit of
confidence, but he did perform well generally in his biggest
games across his career and there were a few years early on
where I thought that he was refereeing especially well with very
strong SFP detection.
