Why was there no VAR intervention for the first goal? If it's a
clear and obvious error in terms of the build up to the goal,
should the VAR not get involved?

I've just seen it on MOTD 2. Did the ball actually touch him? It
didn't seem to.

Postcode rule was scrapped years ago, and that was why he was
taken off the Cup final, incorrectly in my opinion. This season
he has refereed ...

Anthony Taylor is a regular at both the Etihad and Old Trafford
so logically there’s no reason to exclude Mike Dean from Premier
League games involving the Merseyside clubs.

1. When you see it from the camera behind the goal, the keeper's
view is of the pass to the (onside) goal-scorer is 100% obscured
by the (offside) attacker.
2. Mike Dean could invent a reason for the free-kick and the
PGMOL will support him. It was an error, but not as big an
error as failing to defend properly in the next 15-20 seconds
before the goal was scored. Or failing to pick up a six-foot
plus goal-keeper loitering with intent in your penalty area at a
corner in the 95th minute. West Brom are not being relegated
because of refereeing decisions ........

Whilst Mike didn't cover himself in glory yesterday with the
decisions mentioned above, it is worth noting that he will have
had an input into Darren Cann's offside decision. Darren can
only see that there is a player in an offside position from a
side-on view, the decision about impacting the goalkeeper's view
of the ball would have been Mike's, hence the slight delay in
the flag. An excellent example of great teamwork.

Whilst Dean should have given an uncontested drop ball to
liverpool if the ball hit him and they lost possession and not a
free kick, i dont think it would have much difference as
liverpool still took possession of the ball and it was played
quickly. The only thing could be said is the wba players might
have been waiting for a drop ball, however there seemed little
complaints and wba had plenty of time to defend properly before
salah scored.
Dean may have given the free kick for something else.
If Dean gave a free kick because the ball hit him, then he was
incorrect in law.
The hawthorns seems to be a place of referee brain fades this
season after the Mason incident.

I would argue decisions were correct. The free kick was odd but
I cannot really understand what happened. What is the difference
between a free kick and an uncontested drop ball? Could argue it
was the latter. WBA still made a mess of things and then sought
to blame officials.

No, you really couldn't! A Liverpool player caught the ball, put
it on the floor and took the free kick.

There is another issue at stake here, something which crops up
on quite a regular basis but usually makes no difference to the
result. There were 4 minutes added on, and I cannot recall
anything in those 4 minutes to extend it. However, with the 4
minutes expired Liverpool get a corner. So the game was
extended to take the corner. The law says that only a penalty
kick extends the game, yet we invariably see a corner or free
kick causing such an extension. Then, as soon as the outcome is
known, the final whistle blows. Why do referees do this? Are
they instructed to do so, as they all seem to do it?
