István Kovács

I have an interview arranged with István for Hungarian media.
Should be happening in a week to 10 days time. We're in the
process of agreeing the best time at the moment & are going for
after the season but pre- Euro 2021 prep being in full flow!
Does anyone have any questions they would like put to him? I
have a fair few available ready but happy to add in a few extra!
If so add them here or PM me. I can't guarantee they will be
asked or answered but they'll go on the list at least!

"An interesting evening all round at
Wednesday 3rd August 2016
Champions League 3rd Qualifying Round
Celtic 2 v 1 FC Astana
István Kovács (Romania); Vasile Florin Marinescu, Mihai Ovidiu
Artene. 4thers Pavel Cristian Balaj
...
. At the end of the match AR2 made the slight error of heading
to collect the ball, rather than straight to his boss, who for a
moment was left to face the wrath of a few Astana players alone.
The arrival of a Celtic player to shake their (and his) hands
helped the situation as did the arrival of a track-suited
figure, perhaps an Astana coach, who shepherded the players
away. Eventually Mr Kovács received handshakes from the Celtic
players and a number of Astana players too, but then there was a
curious stand off, with two Astana players standing apart a
dozen metres away from the two officials, with the track-suited
gentleman covering the gap between them. A couple of times the
officials took a step towards the tunnel, but thought better of
it, but they did eventually make their exit. The two Astana
players stayed for rather longer, but have probably gone home by
now."
Does he recall this incident, which looked potentially quite
menacing - though ultimately there was no aggression - and was
he surprised at Celtic's failure to provide bodyguards to escort
the officials from the pitch?

Interview with István now up:
HTML https://www.hungarianfootball.com/2021/07/12/an-interview-with-fifa-referee-istvan-kovacs/
Mr Rossetti asked for no interviews to be done until after the
Euros so we delayed it until this weekend. The advantage with
that has been that he has given an insight into the preparation
for the Euros and a bit about what goes on in the team ref camp
during the tournament.
He's lovely. [emoji7]

Excellent read. A few interesting things about Euro preparation.
I love the special mention to Kyros Vassaras and his work.

He clearly respects Kyros very much, his eyes light up when he
talks about the influence and effect he has had on him. If
anyone can bring out the very best in him it will be Kyros. I
don't think it will be that long before he overtakes Hategan &
is considered the #1 there.
