John Busby: Peterborough v Lincoln City
DIR By: yfc54

---------------------------------------------------------
When Michael Appleton the Lincoln boss was interviewed after the
match he said that the referee must have a Peterborough postcode
so no doubt he'll be hit with a charge and a fine. Now I'm sure
there will be many people on here who will close ranks and say
he deserves to be but to me he had every right to be absolutely
seething and to his credit was remarkably calm after his club
had been consigned to the play offs due to a scandalous decision
by the referee John Busby.
Lincoln were the only team who could overtake Peterborough and
claim an automatic promotion spot. For those of you who don't
know Lincoln were leading 3-2 but in the 96th minute
Peterborough were awarded a penalty which they scored. The
result meant that they were promoted and The Imps had lost their
chance to go up automatically.
It was a horrendous decision with massive consequences and I'd
love to hear what the referee had seen because most people are
totally baffled and absolutely disgusted.
I've no doubt Mike Jones will trot out the usual apologies over
the next couple of days but it's too late the damage has been
done.

As a neutral, I have to say I am in full agreement with what you
are saying yfc54. Worst penalty decision I've seen in a long
time and at a key moment in the game and L1 season. I definitely
don't believe that John Busby has done his chances of promotion
to SG2 any good based on that most basic of errors.

I'm also a neutral and was disgusted at what I saw. The
conspiracy theories have started already.

(Edited we do not accept questioning integrity of officials on
this forum you have been warned)
And as a Posh fan couldn't believe the decision, when he blew up
was expecting a caution for simulation.
Thought Mr Busby had a decent hour but as the pressure on the
match grew his decision making became more random and the
occasion seemed to get to him.
8 years ago Mr Pawson gave an appalling 90th minute decision
against Peterborough at Crystal Palace that sent us down
I'm not going to say that things even themselves out, as
officials decisions have an impact on fans that last years.
Never a penalty but nothing more than the pressure getting to
somebody.
(Edited not acceptable)

Of course had Lincoln not capitulated from 3-0 up with 25
minutes left.....!
Poor defending for the first, terrible wall for the second and a
poor penalty decision for the third. I therefore presume the
conspiracy theories are about the Lincoln team?
I mean, even if Lincoln had won they would have had to win both
of their last 2 games and hoped Boro lost, a draw would've seen
them through with a much better goal difference.
Could be a bit awkward in the play offs as well, if their old
manager that they revere so much ends up beating them

Your last point is certainly a good one and as a Posh fan I can
see why you would be reluctant to mention the penalty but you
will know that you got out of jail with that decision. For the
record I believe you deserve to go up but it would have made for
an interesting end to the season if that ludicrous decision
hadn't gone your way.

I agree that the late penalty award for Peterborough was an
error, arguably there was equally or more of a foul on a Lincoln
defender, just before the incident which led to the late
Peterborough penalty.
It seemed that the home team had grounds to argue their player
was fouled in the build up to the Lincoln penalty though. No
credible conspiracy theories, just a bad day at the office for
Mr Busby.

As commented on the appointments thread Busby will be devastated
when he sees it back. I just cannot work out what he saw that
led him to give a penalty.
One decision does not make a referee bad but may certainly
consign him to another season in L1/L2

yfc54 - I'm not a posh fan, and I did say it was poor penalty
decision for the third

Reading my post i can understand the confusion...I meant it as
'I am not a neutral' in respect to this subject , nothing
relating to the official...again my apologies for any offence
