       Statement from the FA

PGMOL to oversee management of Barclays FA WSL and FA Women's
       Championship officials
We're pleased to confirm that from the 2021-22 season, match
officials operating from within the Barclays FA Women’s Super
League and FA Women’s Championship will transfer to the
       Professional Game Match Officials (PGMOL).

The move will see England’s top referees in the women’s game
gain access to the same facilities, training and support that
those in the men’s game receive in the Premier League and
       English Football League (EFL).

Following the announcement of the Barclays FA Women’s Super
League’s new domestic media rights partnership with Sky Sports
and the BBC, the FA Women’s Super League and FA Women’s
Championship Board agreed a new three -ear investment programme
with the PGMOL, to enhance the support and development of
officiating in the professional women’s game.

The move is designed to further professionalise the environment
for match officials, with an increased level of bespoke support
       tailored to the professional game.

Kelly Simmons, our director of the women’s professional game,
said: “This is a major step for our match officials in their
development and I’m confident that PGMOL have the right
infrastructure to provide them with the necessary support to
ensure they continue to develop, and deliver at the highest
       standard within the professional game.

“The women’s game has moved on significantly over the last few
years and we must ensure that our referees are provided the
right environment to move with it. We have a highly dedicated
and passionate pool of officials, and the time is now right that
their development opportunities align with that of the men’s
       professional game.”

Mike Riley, PGMOL managing director, added: “We're extremely
proud and excited to be in a position to help provide greater
support for match officials working in the women’s game. The
popularity and the standard is higher now than ever before and
there is a recognition that match officials should be afforded
the opportunities that are available in the men’s game.

“This is a really positive step and we're looking forward to
working closely with the match officials to support their growth
       and development.”

The agreement with PGMOL will commence from the start of the
2021-22 season. Officials outside the Barclays FA Women’s Super
League and FA Women’s Championship will remain under the
       umbrella of the FA.

Excellent appointment - one of the best female officials around,
this can only be great news for the game.
Now, if only her husband could get the equivalent job (or even
the top job) on the men's side...

I think this is a fantastic appointment. An excellent referee
and an inspiration and wonderful role model to a generation of
       female referees, in particular.

The PGMOL's tweet says "As Women’s Select Group Director,
Steinhaus will implement a strategy for the development of elite
women match officials and will be responsible for appointments
and ensuring officials receive appropriate coaching, training
and development." I have no idea whether she is qualified to do
that. Simply being an excellent referee, an inspiration and a
wonderful role model is not sufficient for that role. There
have been many examples of fine referees taking managerial roles
after retiring that prove that. I wish her well but hope there
was a rigorous recruitment process rather than just a desire to
       appoint a big name.

Although direct comparisons with other sports such as cricket,
hockey & rugby are possible, what strikes me most about her
appointment is that she will need to identify quickly those
women officials who are good enough & to reinforce them with
male appointments for as long as there are insufficient women.
Over time, I assume that one of her targets must be to aim for
100% coverage of the top of the women's English pyramid with
women officials. If I recall correctly from 2020-2021 season,
nearly all the unfavourable comments from women's team managers
(male & female) about officials was after games featuring women
       officials.
If she has another target, which is along the lines of having
more women officials in the men's game at NL and higher, then
she and PGMOL will need to be realistic &/or in step with
FIFA/UEFA. There are very few women officials in other sports
who can make it through to the top of the men's game
internationally - within their own country there are not many
who have progressed to the equivalent of SG1/SG2.
It will be interesting to see how many women officials from
England can, over the next few years, make it onto UEFA's list
(whether as R or AR) and give the likes of Rebecca Welch and
       Sian Massey-Ellis some competition.

I wonder if one of Mike Riley's targets is the converse of this:
to aim for less than 100% coverage of the top of the men's
       English pyramid with male officials.
Can we not just have the best officials appointed for the job?
