I think that is the worst VAR offside call I've seen so far.
Absolutely abysmal.

That was a textbook opportunity to show how well var works and
it was messed up spectacularly, there’s clearly either a problem
with the way it’s used, are lines required on all offside calls
if so horrible implementation or there’s a problem with the
people being too reliant on technology or not willing to use
common sense

Classic case of following the var guidelines and not seeing the
wood for the trees by Beck and Friend, similar to the goal line
technology failure var episode At villa park first day back last
season after the lockdown.
No common sense used at all. Referees are becoming robots, not
allowed to think out of the box.
For all its worth a visit to Barnard Castle for the var
employees tonight is needed.
Diagne was clearly behind the defenders trailing leg, in fact
Bartleys shoulder which was covering Diagne’s shoulder ( the
supposed reason they couldnt draw lines ) was behind the
defenders trailing leg.
Think the on field ar was slightly behind play, skewing his
angle, giving him the impression diagne was offside.
Cant blame the ar for flagging, hope the on field officials
communicated to var as to whom was flagged offside.
Possibly ar thought Bartley scored?
I have never been convinced with Beck when watching him live in
the past, i know he officiated at the highest level but always
thought his performances held clattenburgs team back.
Yes i think they cocked up and are trying to hide behind the var
guidelines instead of owning up.

Completely agree with VAR - very poor again tonight. Clearly
onside, however I have an element of sympathy for Friend and
Beck. If the protocol says you need a clear angle on the camera
to draw all of the necessary lines, and you can’t do that, do
you expect them to use initiative and ignore the protocol? Would
Riley and PGMO back them if they made the correct decision but
didn’t draw the lines? I’m not sure they would given the number
of statements released this season defending the indefensible!
As for the match itself, I thought Hooper was absolutely first
class. Did his job with the minimum of fuss, intervened when he
needed to, allowed the game to flow as much as possible and
seemed to have complete respect of the players. I feel Hooper
has had an excellent season. I know many on here question
whether he is PL material, but this season I reckon he’s been
one of our steadier performers. Time for Riley to reward those
performing well and give him a consistent run of PL games!

Irishref once again on a rampage to get officials sacked. They
made a mistake. If you made a mistake at work would you get
sacked? Kevin Friend has refereed near 250 matches but one
mistake means he should be fired.
A mistake that’s it.
The only mistake is allowing irishref to continuously negativity
review every referee and performance. More balance required.

I agree referee21 - a mistake is all it is, learn from it and
move on. However, this season there have been a fair few
mistakes from VAR so I seriously hope there is some sort of
review at the end of the season with changes made for next year!
One I would propose straight away is a list of specialised video
assistants so our full time refs aren’t juggling referee, fourth
official and VAR appointments, sometimes all on the same
weekend!

I agree Hooper is refereeing really well. To be honest I was
very doubtful at one stage he would remain a PL referee but he
seems to have developed into a safe pair of hands. As you say
they now need to appoint him more regularly so he can build on
his form and cement his place as a solid PL referee.
