Mike Dean : Man Utd vs Brighton

I am one of Mike Dean’s biggest fans , IMO I can’t quite put my
finger on it wasn’t Mike Dean’s usual self , some bizarre
positioning at corners ( quite near the far post ) played good
advantages had a good rapport with the players booked Cavani for
dissent when Fernandes was clearly fouled in the buildup to
Rashfords equaliser nailed on YC for the Brighton player for
that foul and 99.9 % of the time would expect Mike Dean to
produce the YC not sure why he didn’t tonight, one or two other
soft YC’s aswell

Until the incidents with Southampton and West Ham I think he had
been excellent and since his return I don't think he's done much
wrong either. That said - by his excellent standards those two
bad KMI errors could be below his usual standard being that it
is so high.
Now whether he should retire, personally I feel he has another
season in him, certainly going by SG1 standards currently I
don't think he'd be anywhere near the bottom of the merit list.

That was a bad foul on Fernandes after he'd passed the ball to
Rashford for United's first goal. Late and reckless. That was
the sort of incident where you'd expect Mike Dean to correctly
produce a YC. Amazed he didn't.
Apart from being a United fan, I was relieved for Dean's sake
that VAR didn't advise him to go to the monitor for the
Maguire/Welbeck incident. Personally, I couldn't see anything in
it that would have justified a penalty anyway.

Would have been interesting to see if VAR would have interfered
if it had been a Brighton defender nudging a Utd player and
whether in that case it might have suddenly been seen as a clear
and obvious error. If it had been on Fernandes I am sure he
would have assisted them in coming to that conclusion!

Maybe Mike Dean did not see the tackle on Fernandes as he was
following the ball? VAR couldn't intervene and Dean could only
punish what he sees clearly and not what he suspects. It
happens.
Dean has enough credit to go another year and this season would
be a poor season to retire given the lack of atmosphere.
On a practical note, who would replace him? Furthermore I can
think of a number of poorer officials who should go first.
However where are the replacements? Madley hot a poor review
today from some, Jones and others are not getting games. It all
hints at poor development. Atwell is an example of perseverance,
giving officials game time and reaping the rewards later.
Finally we need personalities in the game. Not a reason to keep
him but something to cherish.

I'm a big Mike Dean fan. Loves refereeing & never afraid to make
the big calls. I do think that his judgement is not quite what
it was & same in this game.
I think he has a decision to make. Does he quit whilst still "in
credit" or does he carry on because he wants to? It's admirable
not to allow a small minority to dictate when you quit & he
handled the social media abuse very well. Only he will know.
My view has always been that there should be a compulsory
retirement age of 48 for top flight referees as it allows
younger refs more game time at the top level. If older refs
carry on, the temptation is to give the bigger games to those
with experience, unless you are ultra talented like Michael
Oliver.
I think that the older refs "retired" at 48 can still ref in the
Football League as long as they pass the fitness & performance
tests so their knowledge won't be wasted & it will satisfy
employment law directives as they can still "ply their trade". I
just feel that if refs pick their own retirement days, many will
hang on for selfish reasons & this doesn't do them good nor help
standards in the industry. Lee Mason is a case in point.

Lee Mason is younger than Dean, Atkinson, Friend, Moss, Scott
and Marriner so a bit harsh

From what I saw it looked like a Mike Dean did see itbas he
signalled advantage when the pass was played
