female referees to senior levels, so in my view this is to be
supported. France have a female referee officiating on
Champion's League games, and who probably will go to the Euros
as a referee, the best England can currently get until today is
a female refereeing at the 5th tier.

Quite right but doesn’t mean she is a good referee. I think
frappart has been pushed much for fast too soon - not to say
that she isn’t deserving of her status but her standing in the
men’s game is nothing but a ruse by UEFA.
I would say Welch has done well and now would be the appropriate
time to elevate her to the next level
Surely the only factor which determines whether she is a good
referee is her performances on the pitch and the way she
conducts herself both on and off it.
Agreed whistleblower and people of far more importance than you
and I have determined her performances to
Be above standard hence the rapid rise in the last 18 months.
The real question is whether this is deserved, and in Frappart’s
case I would argue it isn’t. She has been refereeing elite men’s
football for nearly 2 full seasons. I wouldn’t expect Madley or
Bankes to be refereeing a Europa league game after 2 seasons in
the Prem?
And I wouldn’t expect that of Ms Welch either

referees, I can't think of any other explanation.

She's not the first 2A to be given a Football League game this
season so she is doesn't necessarily have the best marks.
Another explanation for her appearance could be a rash of
injuries and/or lack of availability amongst level ones over
Easter. Whatever the reason. it's good to see her being given
the opportunity. It's just a shame that the appointment is
worthy of note because of her gender. It's way beyond the time
when that should be an issue in this, or any other, field.

There are ten Level 1s with FO appointments on Easter Monday,
which I suggest rules out the injury / availability possibility.
I agree that the publicity is in some ways unfortunate, but it's
surely inevitable and does at least show that some progress is
being made, however modest this may be.
When Wendy Toms led the first all female team in the Conference
(circa 1996) there was a round of publicity and several
photographers appeared at Aggborough. Walking onto the pitch she
gave them a distinct swerve, got on with the match and that was
pretty much that. Let's hope this is also true on Monday.

I think Ms Welch may be a little more at home with the publicity
machine; she has just been giving a live interview on the BBC1
1.00pm News. She came over very well though completely failed to
answer the Newsreader's question " Why has it taken so long for
a female referee to be appointed to a Football League match ?"
In her remarks she referred to other female match officials as "
girls "; I am quite unsure of the correct protocol in this area
now but presumably it's OK for a woman to use that term but if a
man had, I think he would, quite rightly, be severely
criticised. I would have thought the answer might be that
women's football now, thankfully, enjoys a much better and
higher status than it once did and so many excellent female
match officials decide to operate in this area. The really
interesting question to have asked Ms Welch is why she has
elected to operate in both women's and men's football.

She already had international experience in the top levels of
the women's game, she's been a FIFA referee since 2009. She
didn't just get her badge and immediately start on the big
games, it's taken her 10/12 years of hard work as a FIFA referee
to get there. Along the way she has even refereed a Women's
World Cup final, she's not some rookie FIFA ref. Going the
route the men take (or at least have taken so far), they
normally start out with some youth games before they even get
their white badge, then move onto U19/U21 tournaments and then
EL qualifiers. You'd not expect a man to take a further 10/12
years to make EL/CL/Euros/WC debuts would you? Especially not if
they were going to be an elite referee. Any referee, male or
female, who hadn't moved beyond doing youth team games after
that length of time I would seriously be questioning how they
had the badge in the first place! She has had a far slower rise
up the ranks than most males will because she learned her trade
over many years in the top flight women's game.

Very common with women, especially those in a close knit group,
so I'd not read anything into it. Bit like you men using the
term lads I guess. Outside of covid times, I'll lunch with the
girls, go drinking with the girls, cheer my girls on in their
respective careers and lives etc. The girls can range from young
ladies in their 20's to not so young girls in their 70's -
they're still the girls.

Thank you for explaining that bmb. I don't think I have ever
heard Mrs W refer to female friends as 'girls' so didn't know. I
personally don't use the term 'lads' but do the term 'chaps' so
that's probably an equivalent. I'm sort of aware of what men
shouldn't call women ( which as you say is deemed OK in all
female company ) what term, I wonder, is is considered bad form
for women to use when referring to men ?

This is strange because I am sure I heard Ms Welch say during

Perhaps she was saying that she had been refereeing men's

that clear.

More enlightenment from Mrs W. She says that it's not her habit
to refer to female friends as 'girls' ( as in going to meet up
with the girls ) but rather 'girlfriends' which is of course an
entirely different usage to that referring to a same gender
partner. It's all very confusing for a man with a small brain
like mine.

Quite right Whistleblower. I heard her say she only started at
27 and had been refereeing for 10 years. As she also mentioned
she was 37, that tied in.
