The issue with European qualifiers is that there are very few
"big" games. Often the matches fighting for 2nd/3rd place are
       more intense.
Do you just limit the elite guys to games we expect or do you
give them games to keep their hand in?

Exactly. Don't forget that every Elite will get at least 2
appointments on these qualifiers (maybe even 3). And we are
still on MD2. There are many matches on September that will
       really require an Elite referee.

Perhaps bmb can provide some information on the Hungarian in
charge of our match as I have never heard of Mr. Berke before?

3rd group ref who should have been promoted to the 2nd group
this January. Could have made elite if promoted in time but
was't... I'd liken him to Clatts maybe, he has that little
rebellious side to him and can at times appear a bit
cocky/arrogant although I don't think he is. Fantastic young
referee, imo. Very strong, fair & consistent application of the
LOTG, fitness outstanding, positioning in the main excellent,
reads a game well, decent man management, loves to play an
advantage where possible but is not afraid to make a big call.
Will not hesitate to book for diving or dissent or fouls if
applicable, I mention the first 2 though as it's a common
complaint that refs ignore these things - our refs don't! Was
the top performing referee of 2020 domestically. His CL debut
was a thing of beauty - an absolute flawless masterclass. Is
prone to an occasional error and again like Clatts if he is
going to get one wrong he tends to do so in spectacular style!
He's not the finished article but gets stronger with every game.
I'm always happy to see him appointed to one of my teams because
you know you are getting a decent, honest referee.

Unless I am missing something, quite a poor appointment for
       Taylor?

I would add that Ekberg’s appointment seems weird.... with a
fairly important observer viewing, is he causing a doubt in the
       committee about his development?

No complaints with Mr Walsh but my goodness what a dire match! 3
penalties for Hungary - 2 for fouls & 1 for handball. All
correct calls. Great save by the San Marino keeper for the 2nd
one, he was certainly man of the match tonight. He put in more
effort than the entire Hungary team. Hungary failed to turn up
in reality, it was a dreadful performance from us & I hope Mr
Rossi is launching a few teacups at them in the dressing room!
It was very hard going to watch. Still a win is a win and we go
onwards! Highlight of the match was definitely the final whistle
       - Mr Walsh did drop a point from his merit mark for the 3 mins
of TAO - the prior 90 mins of torture was more than enough, we
did not need anther 3 mins of it!!!
I also had Kovács István's game on in another window - I'm
biased but he seemed to have a decent game from what I saw.

I agree, the San Marino goalie was a class act over the two
games v England and Hungary. The penalty save v Hungary was top
       notch!
I only saw the 2nd half of the Albania v England game. Kane's
caution seemed 'soft', with Harry doing nothing more than going
for the ball in the goalmouth with two defenders, whilst an
Albanian player could count himself lucky not to be cautioned
for a blatant shirt pull which prevented England building a
promising attack. I had a feeling of inconsistency from O
Grinfeld but happy to be corrected.

Karasev with an important observer.... I guess another viewing
to see if he’s going to the Euro’s.
Still a chance he won’t IMO.
