Kevin Friend, Liverpool v Fulham
DIR By: Craven

There wasn't too much of note from a refereeing perspective in
this game, no controversial incidents or VAR interventions, but
just wanted to give Kevin some praise for his overall
performance. I was impressed with his foul detection, and more
so, his ability not to fall for any theatrics. He let the game
flow, stayed out of the limelight, and contributed to an
entertaining game. Sometimes, as a supporter of a so called
lesser club, you fear getting the wrong end of any 50-50
decisions at the bigger clubs, but there was no evidence of that
at all from Kevin, especially towards the end when Liverpool
were chasing the game and appealing for everything. A really
strong, solid performance.

Not worth its own post but Taylor was good yesterday also,
might have looked easy but excellent positioning early on to
award the penalty.

I think that to be "switched on" and ready to make a big game
decision in a big game after less than a minute is to Taylor's
credit. I know he is one of our top referees and you could
argue that is what is expected of him, but how many times have
we excused refereeing failings due to it being "so early in the
game". Taylor was ready, well positioned, made the right call
(with negligible dissent) and should receive due praise for
that.

Can anyone explain why Fred’s clumsy challenge on Sterling was
ignored? Utd’s pen was the right call but he didn’t even take a
look at City’s

It will have been viewed at Stockley Park and, obviously,
deemed not worthy of intervention

Why 'obviously'? There was contact and it didn't seem one where
Sterling made a meal of it as sometimes happens.

Fred's challenges are invariably 'clumsy'. Whenever I see him
going into a tackle, I think foul or penalty coming up. :o He
tests the nerves of a United fan relentlessly!
It didn't strike me at the time this was one of his more obvious
ones and although Anthony Taylor managed the game very well, I
was surprised there weren't one or two more fouls given (both
teams) when there was no sign advantage was being played. Full
marks for that early penalty decision though.

They didn't intervene so, obviously, they deemed it not worthy
of intervention. Obviously.

Preface to my comments:
1) We would probably have missed the penalty;
2) It shouldn't have caused us to lose the game;
3) United had the better game plan;
4) In my view Taylor is the most improved referee over the last
few years and generally I would have said his performance was
OK.
OK, within that context, the two penalty claims;
First; tangle of legs, could have been either player
responsible, but Jesus should never have been close enough to
make a decision necessary with two defenders covering - so can't
complain. Also note that almost any City player in Martial's
position would have come back out of the penalty area.
City's penalty claim Fred moves across Sterling's path, so far
as I can tell the ball passes between his legs without contact,
and he blocks off Sterling.
Continuing to repeat myself I have no idea what is and isn't a
foul. It is in practice defined by each individual refereeing
decision and bears no resemblance to any common definition in
the LOTG or to any previous decisions be it in the same match,
by the same referee or in any other game.
