This from a man who is a qualified ref and his father was a
football league referee?
Nothing excuses his misconduct.
No he isn't. He might have at one point been qualified 30 years
ago but that doesn't mean he is now. This is one of the biggest
myths in football that Warnock is a qualified referee.
Ok that might just be the reason there is a ? at the end of my
podt.
Qualified or not, he is well aware of the laws of the game,
regardless of that knowledge or badge, or lack of, his attitude
on match day to the officials is horrendous

Whilst I agree with what the majority feeling seems to be that
whilst Gavin was an excellent AR, he is the complete opposite as
a referee and I am certainly not going to attempt to defend his
refereeing at all.
However I will most certainly defend his character as a person.
I've known Gavin for probably coming up 20 years, no more than
acquaintance level, we don't keep in touch but do have mutual
friends who (in pre-covid days at least) I would see
occasionally & if they'd seen him they might say something like
saw Gav the other day, he sends his best/he asked after you & jr
etc. It's a cordial acquaintanceship on a personal level. He
used to come to AFCB a lot in the L2&L1 days, both as an AR & as
a ref & on every single visit he would trot over to the family
stand to say hello to Jr while they were out warming up. Right
from the still in nappies and babbling age, through countless
dinosaur tales as a toddler (jr not Gavin) and the yeah but
playing an advantage is not logical phase which lasted from
about age 6-12. They'd chat again post match dinosaurs,
football, school, advantages not being logical for as long as Jr
wanted to. He's a thoroughly decent guy, calm, patient gentle.
Jr has ADHD & Aspergers, when very young, 5 mins with him was
absolutely exhausting, he literally bounced constantly, he was
really hard work and Gavin had an amazing level of patience with
him. Decent sense of humour as well, he really would laugh, a
genuine belly laugh, when Jr piped up with Mummy called you ^&%$
today, Mummy said you're not very good etc. Even knowing I
didn't rate him as a referee he never wavered from showing
warmth and patience to an inquisitive little boy who always had
100 questions for him.
Say what you like about his refereeing ability, or lack thereof,
but do not try and paint him as a snarling aggressive man. He is
far from it.
Edited to add - Beryl wasn't talking about Gavin but was talking
about Warnock. I misread it! My error & an apology to Beryl for
taking it wrongly.
I shall leave my bit about what a decent guy Gavin is - it might
remind all of us that our referees are human beings and often
far different off the pitch to how they appear on it. (Mainly
because it took me most of the 2nd half of Budafok v Vidi to
type out!! ;)
Most interesting and pleasant to read bmb. I have had the
privilege of meeting many match officials when accompanying
friends who were referees and later Observers to their matches.
There are a whole range of characters as indeed you would find
in any walk of life. The jovial ( quite common ), the serious,
the thoughtful, the brash, the gossipy, the generous. I have met
Gavin Ward twice I would have described him as courteously
aloof. However it may be that before a match he likes to get
into a zone of concentration and therefore doesn't want to
engage in conversation or banter.

Two managers who both have their faults (and obviously some
strengths).
To my mind they are very different. Steve Evans (and his odious
sidekick Rayner) set out to influence and intimidate officials
with foul-mouthed abuse right from the word go. Their behaviour
is their modus operandi and is rarely predicated on anything
that is happening on the pitch. Warnock, on the other hand,
(over) reacts to injustices on the pitch, perceived or real (and
in my opinion often real). He doesn't always make his points in
the best way, but he's frequently right calling out shocking
decisions like those of Gavin Ward.

Gavin Ward has been one of the more reliable SG2 referees for a
while now so it was surprising he made such a bad call
particularly on the Middlesbrough disallowed 'goal'. I don't
blame Warnock for being annoyed and for commenting on the two
controversial decisions when asked about them.
What I do blame him for spouting nonsense about Keith Cooper
being an influence or all referees wanting 'celebrity status'. I
don't know Gavin Ward but there are very few referees whose
demeanour suggest craving celebrity status less than him.
Besides how can making incorrect decisions be a good thing for
any referee's career ?

Middlesbrough charged by the FA for failing to control players,
although surprisingly no mention of any action so far on Colin’s

I'm not shocked that we have been fined for the outburst, and I
know we won't win an appeal. But surely they have to take into
account the decision making from this fixture.

Nope and quite rightly too. There are processes to follow to put
in complaints and stamping your feet in the media isn't one of
them.
Oh how I long for the days when referees can speak after matches
and say what rubbish tactics managers used, how awful some
primadonnas passing was, how their great great granny could have
scored that goal that Mr 75million striker missed from 3 feet
out etc...
