In football International referees are required to speak a quite
high level of English, is it not the same in rugby?
UEFA & FIFA seminars/training camps are all held in English.

I believe English is the prescribed lingua franca, with ironic
and glorious contradistinction, for football and rugby but I was
hugely impressed with Luke Pearce the other Saturday speaking
with members of the France team in French.

It was not what was being said, so much the tone and almost bite
behind it. Gauzerre has a decent grasp of the English language,
better than my French. It was how it was being used that
bothered me, dismissive as opposed to decisive.

I entirely agree with you RCG. It's the same in pretty much
every walk of life and refereeing is no exception. Those without
a natural authority try to manufacture it and most of the time
it comes across as tetchy and irritable. Whether or not the
actual words are used, or just demeanour displayed, but those in
authority who have to declare " I'm in charge " seldom are.

Football could, if willing, learn many things from rugby.
Referees talking to players as Gauzerre did is not one of them.

The Times today reports that Pascal Gauzere has publicly
admitted his mistakes in not allowing England time to re-group
and defend properly and not calling the knock on. Luke's Gospel
chapter 15 Verse 7. PGMOL please note.

And as a result he will be more respected rather than maligned.
Brings clarity to the situation, ensuring any repeat does not
happen.
Proactivity, get a clarification out there, kill the story.
Simples 😆

I entirely concur with that assessment RCG. The PGMOL's stance
of insisting on Omerta for its match officials is certainly
counter-productive in being so defensive and because it closes
all proper scrutiny and explanations comes close to bringing the
game into disrepute.

Not sure I agree. It should not be swept under the carpet
because he has confessed he was wrong.
If he is not up to the pressure at the top level he should be
removed and the committee that put him in that position should
be looked at.
On the other hand credit to him for his statement, but it does
not explain why he did it. Was it blind panic, pressure from one
team or some other reason that it would be unacceptable to name
?

Certainly not swept under the carpet but until one admits to an
error then one cannot hope to learn from it to make sure it
doesn't happen again. Of course there are some people who, while
acknowledging error, seem incapable of learning from it and
therefore become repeat offenders. The proper agreed
disciplinary process should then be employed.

Interesting article from will greenwood on sky website where he
says
Quote
But Pascal Gauzere has history. It was a couple of years ago
when Watson was sin-binned that he allowed Dan Biggar to do
exactly the same thing, and the law in that instance does say
that if you've sin-binned a player, you can't play quickly and
have to allow him off.
"He's compounded the error he made two years ago.
Unquote.
