If he does not blow a second time, we have the Giggs v Lille
goal years ago, verified legal and correct by UEFA

fixtures but I can't think of a major mistake he's made of this
magnitude for several years.

He made a major error just 4 weeks ago by not giving a penalty
when Matty Cash made one of the clearest handballs you will ever
see. He then followed it up 4 days later with a recommendation
whilst on VAR duty that Bednarek should be sent off for
something that wasn't even a foul, let alone a red card
challenge.
And that's without mentioning his shambles at Sheffield
Wednesday last Saturday which makes it four major errors in a
single month.
Nuno was right, he's not good enough.
Whilst I agree with your general point, he was not on VAR for
the Bednarek red card - he was fourth official.

> If Mason had held off his 2nd whistle for a fraction of a
second longer, the ball would have crossed the line and Mason
could have awarded the goal. He tried to award the goal but VAR
rightly pointed out to him that the whistle had blown before the
ball crossed the line, therefore a goal could not be given,
despite the fact that no-one was ever going to prevent the goal
being scored. A mistake which I'm sure Mason will be kicking
himself for as we speak.

In that situation, the mistake was blowing the first whistle in
my view - you wouldn't expect a referee to blow for a penalty
when the goalkeeper was standing by one post would you?
I'd also question why Mason was appointed to this game in the
first place. He doesn't seem to have had too many Pl games
recently and this was a big game at the bottom.
You're right, you wouldn't expect that from a penalty. Yet it's
exactly what happened in Southampton v Brighton in The
Championship in 2011/12. Peter Walton whistled for Lambert to
take the penalty, the keeper was not ready and Walton called it
back for Lambert to score again. And that's not to mention the
fact that the 2 penalties given to Southampton were incorrect -
one was 2 yards outside the box (and flagged as such by the
assistant on his side) and the other was a dive/legal collision.
I guess Pete got away with it as it was in the Championship and
not in the media glare of the PL.

By blowing the whistle a second time in quick sucession surely
mason has decided something was wrong at the taking of the Free
kick, in which case surely you restart with the free kick again.
The big error made was mason blowing and allowing the free kick
to be taken to quickly, once he had marked out
The ten yard distance between ball and wall it was a ceremonial
free kick and he should have been more observant of the
goalkeepers position before blowing to restart.
The second whistle in my opinion was mason trying to correct his
error, also i am not certain he gave the goal until
After receiving information via comms and then changing the
decision soon again after receiving new info via comms.

Whilst I agree entirely that this was a balls up of fairly epic
proportions for that level, what really got my goat was the
interview with Brighton Captain Lewis Dunk after the game, where
he basically destroyed Mason for 'costing them a point'.
Last week they played Crystal Palace, had 75% possession, 25
shots on goal and lost 1-0.
The week before they played Aston Villa, had 26 shots and drew
0-0.
Lee missed none of those chances as far as I'm aware.
The media perception, once again, turns to the referee as the
fall guy, one pundit even stating if Brighton go down by a point
then Lee Mason will have 'important questions to answer'.
This was a **** up, no doubt about that, but if Brighton go down
it's because of their performance in this and 37 other games,
not because Lee blew his whistle twice.

4O at WBA was SG1 Graham Scott. Why didn't Lee hand over to him?

It was 2–1 against Palace but I totally agree. I posted earlier
in the thread. Brighton had 2 penalties and missed both. You
don’t deserve anything if you miss two penalties

Just a couple of points from me on this, to clarify I have seen
the incident in full but only the match highlights on MOTD.
Just a slight talk of language - people keep talking about Lee
Mason's 'performance' and similar, from what I saw apart from
one incident he was OK - first penalty difficult to spot but he
correctly goes with the VAR recommendation, second penalty given
correctly, and the second touch by Welbeck correctly spotted
(yes we all know it in principal, but would we all correctly
award it in the middle of a premier leagues match when we know
the focus already on us) - and as I have seen people say I think
he does take a knock at some point and struggled with it. So I
guess an example of how incident overshadows everything else.
To me what happened was-
Dunk asks for a quick free kick, Lee Mason says yes and blows,
so Dunk shoots
I then think Mason then either spots Johnston out of position
against the post, or potentially some Brighton players too close
to the WBA wall, and decides they can't have it quick so blows
again.
He initially thinks no goal, and then perhaps under some duress,
believes the ball had already crossed the line before his second
whistle (and perhaps the players weren't less than a metre) so
awards it - then VAR check shows ball still live on second
whistle so has to disallow.
He has obviously made a mistake - firstly by saying 'yes' and
then by blowing the second whistle when it was unnecessary, and
for this he should be looked at/expect a call from Mike Riley
etc. and would be good if what he thought/did could be explained
rather than everyone speculating. But as this paragraph began,
it's a mistake - no more, no less - as others have pointed out
Brighton have no one to blame but themselves - when you don't
even hit the target from 2 penalties you can't complain.
On the whole though I've been struck the last few days on the
diverse nature of things in the refereeing 'community'. I
obviously read this board (I read far more than I post) as well
as following various people/groups on Twitter. Last week we had
some people trying to push the idea of clapping referees onto
the pitch and giving them more support and respect, which other
referees severely disliked. And then just on this post I've
counted numerous people who believe Lee Mason shouldn't ever
referee in the Premier League or in fact referee anywhere ever
again. Is this the support we should be giving each other?
I've just had a quick google - Lee first qualified in 1988, so
has been refereeing for 32 years, 18 on the football league and
14 on the premier league - and yes I think as others have
pointed out, his career probably is on the downward slope, and
it would not surprise me with the response to this incident if
it is not attempted to bring this forward, but I certainly hope
he gets at least one other game in the Premier League this
season to proof how good a referee he must be to have been at
this level for so long and hopefully between us we can be a bit
more constructive, and a bit less offensive with our comments

Thank you for your post adcr85, with which I agree. I personally
hope that Lee Mason is not injured in the same way as 'Big Phil'
and that we shall see him back in action on the PL before the
end of the season, but like others, I don't think we shall be
seeing much more of Lee on the PL after that. I think a large
part of the current problem with refs on the PL is to do with
fatigue - physical and mental - with refs taking charge of
matches (PL and Championship) more or less continuously for over
18 months, and keeping fit in the short close season, and of
course having to cope with Covid in their family situations. And
whilst one could call for more of Jones and Hooper and so on,
that would only scratch the surface when it comes to
appointments, week in and week out. Other than hoping the close
season this time round is longer than at the end of last season,
I don't know what the answer is.

I feel for Lee Mason, but he's made a big mistake.
It's one thing for any player to ask the question on taking a
quick free-kick, but it's another for a ref to allow a free kick
to be taken & blow his whistle. The whistle is his authority,
isn't it? Can't understand that he blew his whistle without
checking, but there again, it's not in the laws that the ref has
to wait for the defending team that committed the foul to be
ready for a free kick. Surely, he's experienced enough to know
that.
Maybe, it was purely a concentration issue, but he managed the
aftermath poorly. He was like a rabbit in the headlights with
changing his mind.
I thought Nuno's comments were unfair, but on occasions, Mason
doesn't have strong "body language" in my view & maybe, this is
what Nuno meant. He does seem to have a problem with "selling"
his decisions to the players & keeping them on-side. Under
pressure, he seems to lack confidence & get flustered & at the
top level, this is below par.
Despite the pressures they face, they have to accept pressure &
tough calls.
I think he's a decent ref who's solid rather than stellar & I
hope that he's not hung out to dry by management. It would be
good for him that he does more PL games so he can retire with
dignity at the end of the season rather than be "hounded out".
He is 49.
Maybe, this is a problem with refs staying on beyond 48 as
opposed to "being retired" at 48 like Durkin, Winter et al. Is
this the refs making these decisions or PGMOL management? I
think it holds back young talent as the experienced refs will
always be favoured over the youngsters.
Brighton need to look at themselves before they can criticise
other people for their own failings.
