Having now seen it on MOTD, for better or worse, he does indeed
whistle to start play, Brighton take a legal free kick,
The referee then stops play before the ball crosses the line.
He now cannot, for better or worse, award a goal , so, can only
restart with a drop ball to West Brom gk.....not return to the
freekick!
Shocking to see him then at the restart stand with his hands
behind his back! Why why why why
Small mercy there was not a full crowd in........abomination

If Mason had held off his 2nd whistle for a fraction of a second
longer, the ball would have crossed the line and Mason could
have awarded the goal. He tried to award the goal but VAR
rightly pointed out to him that the whistle had blown before the
ball crossed the line, therefore a goal could not be given,
despite the fact that no-one was ever going to prevent the goal
being scored. A mistake which I'm sure Mason will be kicking
himself for as we speak.

In that situation, the mistake was blowing the first whistle in
my view - you wouldn't expect a referee to blow for a penalty
when the goalkeeper was standing by one post would you?
I'd also question why Mason was appointed to this game in the
first place. He doesn't seem to have had too many Pl games
recently and this was a big game at the bottom.

I firmly believe that an awful lot of the emotion (and personal
animosity on this site towards Lee Mason) might just be be taken
away if Lee, and/or the PGMOL simply came out and said that a
mistake was made and an apology made to both teams. Its worth
adding that nothing can be done about the mistake other than
using it so that all referees can learn from it - so they do not
have to experience it themselves.
Any sanction / performance assessment of Lee Mason's performance
should take place behind closed doors and be a matter for Lee
and his employers. This is the benefit afforded to players
("we'll deal with it 'in house'" is what is often said by a
manager or in a club statement). It should be dealt with "in
house".
PS: I am certainly no fan of Lee Mason but, as a human being,
he must be felling pretty rubbish today and - when all is said
and done - it is a football match. Nobody died.
PPS: Rugby Union might want to follow the same approach in
respect of the debacle in Cardiff yesterday ......

Know what you’re saying but GK could stand on one post (as long
all criteria are met - on line, etc).
Have always agreed with Gary Lineker’s view. Why are we always
protecting the OFFENDING team? They commit a cynical foul on
edge of box - the defenders need an age to push back 10 yards,
we then give them an inordinate amount of time to set a wall to
the exact inch, then keeper moves around getting to his exact
line of view; whilst the non-offending team stands there
waiting.
Same at PK - takes ages to sort defending, then the GK moving
forwards / sideways (all designed to put off the taker) - if he
stands on post banging his boots but is on the line) why not
blow and let the attacker take it??
Foul is given, the laws should expect the players to immediately
retreat the required distance / set up for restart and attackers
should be able to take when they’re ready?
Having signalled, Mason’s clearly panicked (having not seen GK
on post) but ironically should’ve just shrugged and said tough
luck.

Have to say Lineker and the pundits did make sensible comments
on MotD in my view asking why should the offending team get the
protection.
Personally, I thought it was the second whistle that was the
mistake, not the first if, as is being alleged by the Brighton
player that he asked if he could take the free kick and Mason
said yes and blew. What wasn't clear to me was whether Mason
definitely indicated it would be a ceremonial free kick in the
first place.
Sometimes goalkeepers do seem to take an inordinate amount of
time lining up the wall as a previous poster mentioned so my
sympathy rests with the attacking team.
As regards Lee Mason, I think Mark Halsey makes a fair and
balanced comment on twitter. Rather than denigrate Mason too
much, he suggests that his confidence must be very low after
recent mistakes as referee and VAR, and that PGMOL should
shoulder part of the blame for not recognising this and taking
Mason out of the firing line, especially for this type of game.

of the game so wont be 4th official today, been replaced by John
Brooks

the goal. It was already a bit chaotic but if he'd taken control

restart' then he'd at least have regained some authority (and
within the spirit - and as it turned out laws - it felt
reasonable for the goal to be disallowed.)

Surely common sense would say go back to the free kick. One
cannot expect Brighton to be punished twice in this situation
[/quote]
What offence have West Brom committed in order for a second free
kick to be awarded against them?
Ref signals play can restart, the balls kicked, its now in play.
West Brom do not commit an offence so just curious as to why
Brighton get awarded a second freekick?.
Its a referee error, not a team offence and the restart in law
is from where the ball was when the referee stopped the
game.....in this case, as unfair as it seems...is a drop ball to
defending team

Yes, should’ve restarted with drop ball on 6 yard box
(uncontested to GK) as this is nearest point to where second
whistle went. Having disallowed the goal for a technical law
issue (second whistle fraction before going in), if Brighton had
scored ....
He was definitely limping badly by end of highlights.
Must have wanted the ground to open up by that point!

Are Wellbeck and Gross also both going to be sacked for failing
to do their job? 😆
He definitely allows the quick one, shouldnt have blown a second
time, a collection of mess ups.
Hooper as VAR actually made 2 very good decisions. Handball and
the fact the 2nd whistle went before ball crossed line.
