League 2 is the old Division 4 and as a supporter of a League
One club we don't want him either.

I am a staunch defender of referees, but won't defend the
       un-defendable.
       I won't be defending this!!

A certain manager just up the road sadly questioned Mason's
ability and rightly got fined but there is no smoke without
fire. This is an important game for both sides, I feel for them.
       Confidence must be shot.

Can anybody defend this ? I will be amazed if the PGMOL or ex
refs like Hackett Poll Gallagher or Winter try to defend it

       From the Guardian:
I think what happened was as follows. I hope this clears it up
       for you:
       1. Lee Mason gives the free-kick. Everyone gets ready for the
       free-kick.
       2. Lee Mason blows his whistle. Lewis Dunk takes the free-kick.
       3. Lee Mason forgets he blew his whistle.
       4. Lee Mason blows his whistle to tell Brighton that they can
forget about this shot counting because he hadn’t blown his
       whistle yet.
       5. The shot goes in.
       6. Lee Mason has disallowed the goal, because he hadn’t blown
his whistle before the free-kick was taken.
       7. Lee Mason is reminded that he blew his whistle before the
free-kick was taken, and forgets that he blew his whistle
because he hadn’t blown his whistle.
       8. Lee Mason allows the goal.
       9. Lee Mason is reminded that he blew his whistle because he
hadn’t blown the whistle that he had blown.
       10. Lee Mason disallows the goal.
       The end.

The most ridiculous performance ever seen in this season... Lee
Mason seemed he did not know what he was just doing. Even I feel
embarrassed for him in front of my TV screen. ??? ???

This from Anon on BBC Football News:
People messaging in are clearly confused. Was it a mess? Yes.
Did Lee Mason get it right? Yes. Were VAR right? Yes. He blew to
say ok to take. Noticed WBA weren't ready and blew to stop play,
the goal hadn't been scored before the 2nd blow. So, it doesn't
       stand.

After seeing the half time replays I think what has happened has
       become clear.
Mason blows the whistle for the free kick to be taken, the ball
is kicked, before the ball crosses the line he blows the whistle
again. VAR Hooper has no option but advise that the goal should
       not be allowed.
I have no idea why Mason would blow the whistle a second time,
almost like a nervous reaction to the free kick being taken a
quickly. Then to disallow the goal, then allow it again I'm at a
loss. Just disallow as you've blown twice, if you are unsure if
the ball crossed the line before you blew, wait for VAR to award
the goal if needed. Then to meander around the half way line,
players pushing and shoving, surrounding Mason, all the while he
looks totally lost, no authority or control.
This is a totally inexcusable mistake and how it was handled is
arguably almost as bad. I have every sympathy with Lee Mason, he
was clearly shook and knew what an awful error he had made, but
there is no defending him. It is an awful awful decision to blow
again awfully managed thereafter. I can only hope he regains
       composure for the second half.
