CUP FINALS 2021
DIR By: Hendo

If I have understood things correctly after Boris’ announcement,
both the Carabao and F A Cup Finals will be played with minimal
or no fans present again this year.
As we said last year it would be sad for a referee to be denied
the buzz of a Wembley Final without a full capacity so do we
assume that refs who have already had the final, like Taylor
last year, will be reappointed? If so surely Michael Oliver must
get the F A Cup Final but not sure about the Carabao. As Dean
and Atkinson had the semis could Marriner maybe be a safe bet,
unless they give it to Taylor sadly
Any thoughts?

Under normal circumstances I think Craig Pawson is by a long way
the most deserving of the FA Cup final of the refs who haven't
had it (and over quite a few who have IMO!). Given the no fan
situation I agree with you that Oliver would be a sensible
choice to be consistent with Taylor being reappointed last year,
would also make it even, so to speak, between the two UEFA
Elites.
The Carabao cup is harder to call. Marriner would certainly be a
worthy choice if they are reappointing, otherwise I would
suggest Chris Kavanagh, Stuart Awtell or Paul Tierney.
I hope they appoint Bankes/Madley/Jones/England as FO. I always
think its better to give up and coming referees motivation
rather than retiring refs a farewell FO send off!

If the finals are given to referees have already had a final,
the fa cup goes to oliver and carabao to marriner, dean or
atkinson.
If not then pawson for f a cup final with tierney for carabao
cup final.

I agree entirely with Claretman's analysis. I suppose it is just
possible that they might give the FA Cup Final to Atkinson but
if it is to be a second timer then I think Oliver is
overwhelmingly likely and thus parity between England's two
international Elite Category referees is maintained.

There will be some pilot test events from mid April with fans so
I wouldn't be surprised if the two cup finals are included in
that but obviously will be a fairly small number.
If refs are to do it again, Dean and Oliver would be my personal
choice - either way round. I think they've consistently been the
best two for some time. Giving Oliver a second final would seem
fair after England's other elite FIFA referee had the FA Cup
final again last year and I think Dean would deserve it for his
length of service and excellence (and being messed about a bit
in 2006!)

Will they have to wait to see if Southampton get to the Cup
Final? ;)

Of course it could be someone reappointed to the cup finals this
year but I don’t think so. Last FA cup final is an exceptional
case cause all the refs did not have much experience behind
closed doors so someone like Taylor who had a cup final before
would be reappointed as a safe option.
But this season most of games are without fans and refs are
getting used to it. Many young international referees are
appointed to big games this year and they have already acquired
enough experience, hence I would expect Pawson/Kavanagh to FA
cup final and Tierney/Kavanagh to Carabao cup final.

It wasn't due to having experience of refereeing behind closed
doors. Rather, because you can only have the FA Cup final once
is it really fair to give it to someone in an empty stadium,
where their friends and families can't be there, and where the
experience is undoubtedly diminished. Given we now know that
both cup finals will be behind closed doors, I fully expect they
will go to people that have already had them.

Pilot events will be from 12th April so I would say there's a
decent chance some fans will be allowed in for the finals,
although obviously nowhere near normal.

I totally agree, can't see a new ref (one without a final
before) doing either final unless fans higher than a couple of
thousand can attend. If they decide to go with ones before, i
would go with Oliver like the rest for the FA cup. Personally,
not a big fan of Atkinson, however think he will do the Carabao.
if new refs assigned
Kavanagh for FA
Pawson for Carabao
