Oh dear - brilliant positioning?

Should be a drop-ball restart to the defending goal-keeper, but
I don't know how the game was actually re-started. Bet the other
team would be happy about that! ;D

Referee incredibly unlucky, victim of being so much up with play
Very interested to see what happened next

Don't think I agree that ref was unlucky - don't think he should
be positioning himself so deep.
I was always taught never to go in the six yard box when the
ball is in play unless someone was being murdered!

Before the "new" rules it would have been a goal-kick, so not
much difference.

Not particularly germane to this incident but I reckon Mexican
referees must be allotted a good measure of hair oil to complete
their appearance. This chap puts me in mind of a Mexican referee
who officiated at at least a couple of World Cup Finals and
whom, on this site, we playfully nicknamed Count Dracula. Anyone
remember his name ?

I agree. I think top flight refs are taught to veer off towards
the corner of the penalty area to avoid this particular
situation arising. I recall 'Speedy Gonzales' aka Andy Woolmer
heading into the thick of things in the penalty area at Gresty
Road on one occasion and practically having his head taken off
by a goal-bound shot. I don't think he did that again!

Unless laws have changed again, shouldn't restart be a goal
kick? The ball has hit the referee and I think then gone
directly out of play. Doesn't drop ball only apply if ball
remains in play?

Law 9.1
The ball is out of play when:
•
ground or in the air
•
•
o
o
o
In all these cases, play is restarted with a dropped ball.
The ball didn't remain in play. The correct restart is a goal
kick.

If the ball had gone in the net would it have been a contested
drop ball or would it have been an uncontested drop ball to the
attacking team as they played the ball last?
