The shirt colour thing is stuck on the past, much same as the
old Wimbledon wear white, and snooker traditions too
We once wore suit and bowler hat and stood at the side of the
pitch, and hey, things change
Teams dont care if you wear a nurses uniform, nobody is going to
praise you for wearing black, but having a mare.
Nothing stays the same in life, and when relative to refereeing,
its imperative that we change with them

But what does stay the same is that match officials should, by
the colour they wear, be obviously and immediately
differentiated from players. So, it matters not when the
decision is made as to match officials' colours or indeed by
whom it is made, just so long as there is no confusion. It
really ought to be just about the simplest thing to ensure and
there is little excuse that I can fathom for not getting it
right.

Slightly tangentially to this discussion. One of my keen
interests is in supporting efforts in eliminating homophobia
from football. Now here's an idea. For one weekend it be
designated that match officials wear a rainbow kit. On a
previous anti-homophobia campaign one SG1 referee nobly and
bravely allowed himself to be photographed with rainbow laces, a
set of rainbow cards poking out from his top pocket and a
rainbow lanyard to his whistle. That referee ? Kevin Friend for
whom my respect soared as a result. Really good to see a senior
match official supporting this just cause.
Yes, I know it's very easy to level the accusation of tokenism
but tokenism is better than nowt in my opinion.

Many teams have had pink kits to a) raise awareness and b) raise
funds for research into breast cancer which has always been well
received. The only issue I could see with a one off rainbow kit
is that it would clash with every colour going! Lanyards,
whistles (if fox would make one) and laces can be used far more
easily. Rainbow cards would cause an issue as to if it was a red
or yellow being shown - no harm in a rainbow edge on them
though.

I always think the black looks very smart and more professional
& it is my preferred choice. I'm not opposed to alternate
colours except for yellow which I have a very intense hatred of!
Not a fan of pink either but I do tend to love the purple kits
as well.

will wear black - you (teams) don't ?? I do realise that I am a
dinosaur and need pensioning off, but this did work for about
100 years. It was only our Caledonian cousins in their national
team kit that caused a problem - with a rare sighting of the
red, or yellow referee's shirt for the odd Home International
match - apart from that, black seemed to work fine.

The black adidas kit with the purple piping & collar - best kit

I believe the PL do choose the colour, but how do they get it
wrong so often? So many games in PL where a goalkeeper is in
black and so are the officials, despite other choices being an
option. Shouldn’t be hard to get it right!
Martin & team obviously had the purple shirts with them, so why
not use them from the outset, as black was clearly never going
to be great.

Mr Ellerly famously had to put on a teams training top in a
game, as he only had black
Total guess it was Villa v someone. If someone corrects that,
great
Am sure there was logic to taking one kit, I just cannot work it
out..

Clearly the problem should have been spotted before the
officials took to the field, and certainly before kick-off. I
have mentioned before a Rugby League match between Huddersfield
(normal shirts: claret and gold hoops) and Castleford (normal
shirts yellow.) The referee, Brian Hall of Lupset, duly donned
his black shirt and was waiting at the centre of the stand when
Cas emerged irom the dressing room at the end of the stand in
black, with a narrow yellow hoop. Back went Mr Hall,
reappearing in a white shirt, just as Huddersfield trotted out
in their alternative white shirts with narrow claret and gold
hoop. Unusually, Mr Hall did not carry a third option, so had
to referee in borrowed claret and gold hoops.
Those with better memories than mine may be able to give details
of the match at the 1978 World Cup, when the late John Gordon,
as 4th Official((?), had failed to spot a colour clash between
the two teams, leading to a delayed start., and some criticism.
