Oh for the days when teams weren't allowed to play in black or
very dark colours eh?
Incidentally I think I recall a post indicating that "top level"
referees are instructed by the competition which shirt to wear
(The teams having been required to advise the competition of
their intended colours)
When I was administrating a team our colours formed part of the
confirmation email to the opposition and referee

I watched the highlights programme AT refers to. The presenter
was making a very brief, light-hearted and complimentary comment
about Mr Martin 'working out', rather than "unnecessarily
drawing attention to the officials".

Point taken TVOS and ARF. I think I might have read more into
the remarks than I should, having remembered some of the
comments made about Stephen's physique on RTR. Happy to draw a
line under this one.

Being a glutton for punishment, I watched the game on Sky live
and remarked very early on that the referee's choice of shirt
was ridiculous. Coventry wore a special one-off kit for the
game which was very dark blue so Martin wearing black was the
worst possible choice. The issue should have been sorted before
kick-off, not at half time. I am of the opinion that referees
should always wear black unless there is a clash, and this was a
case where it was down to common sense.
In fairness, I think Martin had a decent enough game. He showed
far more feeling for the game than the referee for the previous
game at St Andrews where the official was one Jared Gillett.
Gillett showed little rapport for the game and is another
referee who is happy to show random yellow cards with not much
consistency. In an uncontroversial, one-sided match he did seem
to like being the centre of attention, so I have no doubt he
will soon be regarded as SG1 material in the near future. ;)

I see plenty of refereeing performances that put me in mind of
something else seen at, and after, the Horse of the Year Show.

How about this for a way forward ...... we (match officials)
will wear black - you (teams) don't ?? I do realise that I am a
dinosaur and need pensioning off, but this did work for about
100 years. It was only our Caledonian cousins in their national
team kit that caused a problem - with a rare sighting of the
red, or yellow referee's shirt for the odd Home International
match - apart from that, black seemed to work fine.

Referees don't get to choose what colours they wear, it is all
sorted out ahead of match day. I would hazard a guess that
there has been a communication breakdown and someone hasn't
realised that Coventry were in the special one-off kit. If that
was the case the officiating team probably wouldn't have
realised there was a problem until they were on the pitch.

They are told what colours to wear. In the PL and at FIFA level
at least so I assume it's the same in the FL. The teams have to
submit their colours to the appointments peep who then emails
team ref to tell them what kit to wear. I have seen proof of
these emails at PL & FIFA level when forwarded them by certain
refs trying to avoid an ear bashing for wearing that vile colour
& bleating it wasn't their fault!

Y****w is never forgivable WB under any circumstances. It should

I always thought GK had to be in different colours as well but
that seems to have become very lax, if indeed it is the case.
Goalkeepers seem to quite often wear similar shades of the same
colour. The worst I have seen was Karakó in the NBI one team in
a lighter shade of y****w and both GK in a sort of gold coloured
shade of y****w. Talk about amateur hour!
There is one ref who I send a pre-match "go be awesome" message
to before every game. I always say "no y****w, go top less if
you have to!" He recently sent me a photo from the dressing room
about 15/20 mins before kick off of team ref all sat there
shirtless! I assumed by this they would be in y****w and replied
cussing him out very badly, as they walked out 10 mins later
they were in black and all in fits of laughter! He is not yet
forgiven for winding me up!
