Stephen Martin, Coventry v Brentford

I must admit I was amused by Quest TV's coverage of Stephen
Martin (and team) changing from black to purple at half time in
the Coventry v Brentford game. The official reason for the
change was that the black clashed with the dark colours worn by
Brentford, which it did to an extent. But the pundits suggested
that it was because Stephen wanted to highlight his physique and
work in the gym during lockdown, which he could do better in
purple than in black. I could see where they were coming from!

Brentford were in white.
It's not the first time Mr Martin's physique has been mentioned.
Keith Hill once commented on it after a 2-2 draw for Dale at
Southend, which nemesis may recall.

Can't say I have noticed his physique but he has a most
idiosyncratic style of running. Prancing best describes
it....puts one in the mind of Horse of the Year Show.

With some of his performances Fulham received in the
championship in recent years from Martin, Desert Orchid would
have been a far better spectacle in the middle!!

He's always been big, can't imagine he's put that much more
muscle mass on since the since of the pandemic. Sounds like yet
another example of the media finding a way of unnecessarily
drawing attention to the officials (something which we
supposedly do to ourselves!)

Thanks, yes of course it was Coventry in the dark colours and
the Brentford manager who complained leading to the change at
half time.

I haven't seen footage of the match so can't comment on the
colour clash personally. However, this sort of thing is so
unbelievably pathetic and so easily avoided. Surely it doesn't
take that much nous to find out what colours the teams are
wearing and for the match officials to pick a contrasting colour
for themselves. When I was out regularly accompanying a friend
to his matches the very first thing he did on arrival was to
visit both changing rooms, look for himself at the colours and
then chose a contrast for himself and his team. Simples !
At the moment there are four colours for referees; black,
yellow, purple, greeny/blue. I suppose it is possible that those
four colours be taken by the two teams and goalkeepers but
highly unlikely. What I have noticed is that a goalkeeper's
jersey colour doesn't enter into the equation and I wonder why
not ?For instance, you might often see teams playing in red and
blue with one of the goalkeepers in black and the other in green
and the referee goes with black. Why when there is a totally non
clashing colour, yellow ( sorry bmb ) which he could use ? Other
times the teams in black and white, goalkeepers in yellow and
red and the referee goes with yellow when greeny/blue and purple
are available. I just don't understand it.
Whilst on colours. Is it not still the case that goalkeepers
have to be in different colours? I'm sure I caught a game this
weekend past on Match of the Day where both goalkeepers were in
almost identical shades of yellow jerseys.
Oh it's grand to have a curmudgeonly rant early on a Monday
morning. Sets one up nicely for the week ahead ;)

I watched the highlights programme AT refers to. The presenter
was making a very brief, light-hearted and complimentary comment
about Mr Martin 'working out', rather than "unnecessarily
drawing attention to the officials".
Let's not turn it into something it wasn't.

I was also surprised Man City went white yesterday at the
Emirates, presumably because they have to wear it a certain
number of times for sponsorship reasons. However it was a
hideous clash with Arsenal and the white sleeves/back.
Money talks these days....

It should do but in the professional game it is something else
they seem to do differently to us at grassroots. If we did that
on a Saturday afternoon in front of an observer I don’t think
they’d bother with the game!
