I take your point about the impression its creates and I find it
hard to disagree with you. At the same time though it's
difficult isn't it as they are so often criticised for looking
at the screen for too long.
Personally as I agree with the call its probably easier for me
to defend his actions at the screen, but as a general principle
I do think that if the referee is happy with what he sees it
shouldn't matter how long he looks. He was in a good position
live and obviously didn't see anything at the screen that looked
at all different from what he was expecting, he's in charge and
if he's happy then I think you have to accept that . Minimum
time for an accurate call I guess is the goal, so I can see why
many will have an issue with this as it seems I'm in the
minority for feeling he was correct.
[/quote]
Firstly, I agree absolutely that the final decision rests with
the on field referee. However, if a colleague as VAR advises to
take another look at an incident, I think a referee ought to at
least consider the possibility, however remote in his view, that
he's missed something and got it wrong. It needn't take ages
but I just felt Kavanagh was making a point -"why are you
bothering me with this" and to my mind doesn't reflect well on
him.
I've not studied it in as much detail as some but I tend to
agree the penalty was justified.
I see in the meantime Readingfan has posted a similar view about
Kavavagh spending so little time at the monitor.

Fair point about the VAR essentially deserving the respect of
the referee giving proper consideration of the clips they chose
to show him, I actually hadn't thought of that and the
perception a very quick review can create. It is more of an
aesthetic thing IMO but you are probably right, he should've
taken an extra moment to consider what the VAR wanted to show
him.

Read thro the posts before only now seeing the incident
The defender has, wittingly or otherwise, tripped the striker by
being where he was, grounded or not
Thats a penalty kick, clear as day. The only issue i see is
VAR even suggesting the referee reviewed it
I too would concur with the apparent bewilderment as referee
being advised to have another look at what is in reality a
straightforward call.
A similar clip was doing rounds on a UEFA coaching course around
ten years ago,
Does it look. Fair? Prob not,
Is it the attacker who is tripped by the defender, in the box?
Yes. Penalty kick

BAFRA . I meant that the VAR process is in disrepute. When a
respected, experienced VAR suggests a clear and obvious error,
which I assume is why Kavanagh was asked to look at the screen,
then that review should be thorough. Your final comments are not
worthy of this site, IMO.

There obviously speaks a Liverpool supporter!! I do not support
either team, just a neutral seeing as it is.

I absolutely agree with Beryl.
Trent didn’t win the ball...
He was tripped, albeit by his Trents head
In the penalty area
Only outcome: Penalty.
Not sure why people are disputing this! The biggest issue here
is: why has Kavanagh been sent across, there is contact in the
box without winning the ball. Perhaps this is why Kavanagh spent
so little time at the monitor as it’s simply a penalty kick.

You may want to study the statistics for which club has had most
VAR decisions go against them before you display your bias. This
forum is for discussion of refereeing, not for criticism of
clubs you dislike.

Yes and Liverpool are nowhere near the top for decisions
against... 😉🙄

The thing I can’t get my head round here... people scream and
shout for the referee to “have another look” at the monitor all
the time regarding big onfield calls, saying we’re not using VAR
right in this country etc etc.
The VAR then sends the ref to have another look and he’s happy
enough to stick with his on field decision having clearly had a
conversation with the VAR prior to getting to the screen. I
don’t see the big deal about the lack of time he spends. They’ve
clearly communicated prior to getting to the screen so why delay
the game further just to appease every Tom, dick and Harry who
believe he should spend more time there so as to avoid coming
across arrogant?!
What do you actually want? People look for reasons to be
offended on here and across social media platforms. I fear that
officials in this country really can’t win most of the time as
someone is always feeling hard done by whether they get it right
or check the monitor or not.

I was initially a bit baffled, but if you watch it after the
initial contact TAA raises his leg and sweeps it around, and
that brings down Calvert-Lewin. I get the argument that he was
already on the way down, but it looked to me like he was trying
to stay on his feet and that final action took him out.
Regardless of what we all think though, there is no way on earth
it could be described as a clear and obvious error.
