Appalling decision made worse by incompetence from the VAR.
Calvert-Lewin’s momentum took him into a grounded defender.

VAR can advise whatever they like - it’s still the Referee who
has the final call.
As the VAR Protocol page on the PL website clearly states:
“The final decision will always be taken by the on-field
referee.” (My bold for emphasis)
Unless you’re advocating for VAR to be even MORE involved with
remotely refereeing games?
Slippery slope that if so...

He did give the impression of just going through the motions by
looking at the screen, having already made his mind up he was
sticking to his decision.
Whether the decision was right or wrong I felt his attitude had
an air of arrogance by barely looking at the screen, and I
suspect the VAR was not too impressed either.

You may want to study the statistics for which club has had most
VAR decisions go against them before you display your bias. This
forum is for discussion of refereeing, not for criticism of
clubs you dislike.

My opinion is that VAR is the worst thing football has ever
inflicted on itself but there have been plenty of decisions
where VAR has overturned the on-field decision.

I take your point about the impression its creates and I find it
hard to disagree with you. At the same time though it's
difficult isn't it as they are so often criticised for looking
at the screen for too long.
Personally as I agree with the call its probably easier for me
to defend his actions at the screen, but as a general principle
I do think that if the referee is happy with what he sees it
shouldn't matter how long he looks. He was in a good position
live and obviously didn't see anything at the screen that looked
at all different from what he was expecting, he's in charge and
if he's happy then I think you have to accept that . Minimum
time for an accurate call I guess is the goal, so I can see why
many will have an issue with this as it seems I'm in the
minority for feeling he was correct.

Marriner was Kavanagh's VAR for the FA Cup game Arsenal V
Newcastle where the red card was overturned by VAR. You do
sometimes wonder if there's a particular dynamic between some
officials because Kavanagh looked at it so briefly that it
seemed there was barely time for Marriner to communicate with
Kavanagh his take on it or Kavanagh to respond to that. Almost
regardless of the final decision, it doesn't seem best practice
for a referee to spend so little time at the screen.
It's often said that PL referees tend to go with the VAR too
much but I think that might be a bit of a misconception. We've
had four (?) referees stick with their initial decision after
viewing the monitor which I'd suggest is more than many other
leagues.

Originally, from my sofa, I thought no penalty as he had fallen
over a prone defender who had no way to avoid the collision.
BBC suggested that AA had lifted a foot and tripped him. Haven't
seen anything to prove or disprove that assertion so cannot
make definitive comment on veracity of decision

I can't comment on other leagues but in EL on Thursday three
referees went against VAR advice on that night alone. I am only
guessing but that would indicate to me that in other leagues
referees are more comfortable with going against VAR advice.
Probably wide variance across leagues though.

VARs making the decisions didn't work too well last season!
The VAR essentially did his job (apart from those who thought it
was a penalty.) He thought it was a clear error so correctly
initiated the review process. There's nothing incompetence or
disrepute about that.
It was Kavanagh's mistake - twice.

I also agree, think it’s a penalty although certainly
subjective. No issues with the time he has spent at the monitor
either, people were moaning not so long ago about how long VAR
checks were taking. Kavanagh has gone over, shown authority
(whether you agree or not) and stuck with his call - good for
him. Personally think it was another very good performance from
Kavanagh and will surely make the step up to elite level within
the next 12-18 months.
