There is nothing which I would wish to add to the comments
already made by others regarding the incident in question.
However, it occurs to me that the video and associated comments
have reached the national (and quite probably international)
news media with extraordinary alacrity - and this leads me to
wonder if the same level of publicity and scrutiny would have
occurred before the days of wall-to-wall TV coverage. Did
similar confrontations between referees and players in these
days take place, and if so were they so widely reported? I
would venture to suggest that the answers to these two questions
are "yes, at least occasionally" and "no". For what it is
worth, I can clearly recall a match at Brighton's old Goldstone
Ground, in which the referee (who had better remain nameless)
completely lost control and had a major shouting match with a
particularly inocuous player (although I am not of course aware
of the precise words which were exchanged); I am not aware that
he faced any sanction as a result.

Note to self, need an eye test - all those fans heckling me over
the years may have had a point.
Well, at least I was able to inadvertently endorse the original
comment!!

Ditto Scott Mathieson who had a verbal tete-a-tete with Neil
Warnock in the tunnel at QPR after a game without perhaps
realising that the TV cameras were still rolling for all to see
and hear. I think Scott got away with it!

Phil Dowd was another referee who would happily use 'fruity'
language to individual players. He had quite a range of facial
expressions that rarely hid his emotions.
Also fair to say (in general) there was a north/south divide
between those referees who used swear words and those that didnt
(although 'bloody' to me hardly registers as foul)

Recall a R U game many years ago when the wonderfully eccentric
upper class Roger Quittenton was reffing. Following foul play at
a line out right in front of where I was standing Roger (wearing
his traditionally tight fitting short shorts) pointed to the
offender and said in the most wonderfully posh voice “you were
abusing him number 5”.

I (Ian / Ivan ?) Smith of Accrington was banned for swearing at
players during a game involving Leeds.

Surely Ivan, an ex-Acrington Grammar School lad would't use bad
language --would he?
On reflection, I suppose that it would be acceptable because it
was Leeds. ;D
