If I recall correctly Wayne Barnes dismissed Dylan Hartley in
the R U Cup Final for calling him a “f****** cheat”. To Barnes
it was the use of the word ‘cheat” which brought into question
his integrity which was the problem, not the swearing.
Great footage of it on YouTube - ‘that player called me a
f****** cheat, he leaves the field”. No mess.

According to The Times, it is thought to be the first time the
FA has brought a case against a senior referee since 2000 when
Paul Taylor was charged with making insulting remarks to Notts
County's Sean Farrell. Taylor was cleared by a disciplinary
commission three months later. Darren, a 50 year old RAF
sergeant, has been on the FL list since 2004.

I think Paul Taylor was one of the last referees who liked to

Not strictly true. He missed a couple of seasons 2008 ish -
possibly overseas posting?

Its just that - having lined to Paul many times on both the
Isthmian League and Football League - he was very much a referee
with a personality and worked hard to have a good liaison with
most of the players. I would go to far as say that his man
management skills were stronger than his technical refereeing
skills. In stark contrast to many of his 2021 successors.

I hesitate to write this as I don't want to bring on a case of
apoplexy in our esteemed contributor JohnCoyle but I believe, in
more modern times, the referee with one of the greatest
reputations for enjoying banter with the players was........Mick
Russell.

I think there's a misunderstanding here.
"last referee" meaning most recent as opposed to least likely.

Alan Judge has tweeted: "There was no need for an apology. I
wasn’t looking for one or looking for any action to be taken.
In football as everybody knows stuff happens in the heat of the
moment in a game. We all make mistakes and for me that is the
end of this."
That is all very magnanimous of him but I can't help but feel
that this hints at the root of the problems that occur on
football pitches. The players consider anything that happens on
the pitch to be divorced from the rest of life. Alan Judge is
wrong; there was a need for an apology from Darren Drysdale.
Given that he is unlikely to have become so enraged without good
cause, I rather suspect there is a need for an apology from Mr
Judge too.
There have been occasions when players have apologised to me for
incidents that have happened during games. I have always been
happy to accept them and move on. Things do happen in the heat
of the moment but the apology ends any personal ill feeling that
may exist. That is not to say that any required disciplinary
process won't proceed, of course. (And, as I was taught, any
apology is included in the misconduct report. It's much harder
to launch an appeal when you have apologised and therefore
accepted that you were at fault :).)
