Have to totally disagree here, I'm afraid. If this were the
other way round, this forum would (rightly) be in absolute
uproar about the disrespect shown to the referee and probably
calling for the player to be banned for life etc. It can't be
one rule for players and another for referees.
We, "the refereeing fraternity" are sometimes our own worst
enemy in the fight for respect. We often close ranks and defend
the indefensible. We need to be more honest, more transparent,
and apply the same behavioural expectations we have of others to
ourselves.

If ever an illustration was needed of what's wrong with how the
media portray football, this is surely it.
Players dive, cheat, feign injury, swear, week in, week out and
everyone accepts it as part of the game. A referee (a human
being) reaches his tolerance for a split second and reacts and
it makes headlines across the world.
As officials, we are the keepers of the standards - I get that -
so our behaviour should be a 'cut above'. But I hope over the
coming days the media 'slant' on it turns to one of a match
official who, for one brief moment, has had his fill of crap
from players and could take no more.

I do not condone the actions of Darren and expect him to be
disciplined and reminded of his responsibilities.
However directly to you rustyref, Whilst I believe what you say
I find what you say to be both ridiculous and unsurprising. It’s
no wonder grassroots are under so much pressure when the
professional game is obviously playing to different rules and
interpretations.
How can one justify to a 16 year old kid or a pub team on a
Sunday they should be sent off for OFFINABUS when they say “but
xxx didn’t get sent off in the premiership yesterday?”
Is it any wonder so many referees have quit the game with an
admission like that?
The governing bodies have brought it upon themselves!! The
pathetic pandering and bow down to big clubs, players and
leagues has created this mess instead of getting a grip with a
clear issue.
Clear diving, cheating, confronting referees, referee blaming,
from across the media and the like going unpunished - how long
has it been going on?
In that sense I have every sympathy with Darren.

What Darren has done here doesn't look good, I totally accept
that, but we don't know what his state of mind was like. What
had happened earlier in the game, but also had he experienced
problems at work earlier in the day, has he had family problems,
any bad news, etc. No one knows, and whilst a player behaving
like this towards a referee would barely get any press, the
other way round it is big news and totally unacceptable.

reacted on the pitch to situations far from professionally, and
it was always when I was annoyed for another reason. I'm pretty
sure they were always midweek games where I'd done a full day at
work, and for me that is just human nature. If you've had a row
with a supplier, customer, your manager, or generally been
distracted, just a few hours before kick off it will be
difficult for that to be completely removed from your mind. The
top level referees don't have that excuse (although they could
still have personal issues), but those at L1 and below certainly
do.

I have to respectfully disagree with some of what you say in
your comments, rustyref.
No matter what the Referee has gone through that day, that week
etc., in his/her private life, he/she must have the self control
to leave it at home/work etc. and officiate the game in a normal
and professional manner at all times. As someone who held a
Supervisory professional post, part of my NVQ training was not
to allow outside factors influence the way I dealt with people
not connected with the situation concerned. You cannot take out
your frustrations on players, club officials etc. and in my
opinion, there is never an excuse to do so. Yes, we are all
human but you have to learn the art of self control. As others
have said, if the player said something offensive etc. to Mr.
Drysdale, a red card is available for that very purpose. You
don't react and "get in the player's face".

Well said. I cannot see how the 'refereeing fraternity' would
support Drysdale without knowing exactly what happened.
Likewise he should not be condemned until the facts come out. I
would say that it is not surprising that the incident is
attracting attention, simply because referees are expected to
uphold standards and set an example within the game.
I would expect Drysdale to be removed from fixtures while the
matter is investigated, bearing in mind that such a suspension
is quite normal in employment matters and is regarded as a
neutral act. There isn't much point in speculating beyond that
at the moment.

As someone who is struggling with lockdown, having mental and
social issues I do wonder what effect Covid is having on
player's and referee's welfare and mental state. No crowds,
strict controls, domestic lockdown etc. All this lowers the
threshold when someone may overreact. I think we should be
careful before we condemn anyone without knowing the full facts
and try to gain a greater understanding of the effects of Covid
and other external factors.

No matter what the facts are in the case, Mr. Drysdale should
not have reacted in the way that he did. Self control is
everything when you officiate.

Let me start by saying that I am someone who expects match
officials to hold to the highest standards and I hold no brief
for Darren Drysdale ( who I think is the longest serving referee
at this level ) one way or another; never met the chap either.
Now let me also say that I accept that I may well be holding a
minority view here but I have looked at the footage about three
times and it's something or nothing for me. I may have a
different threshold of what constitutes aggression but I would
say Drysdale looked more displeased than aggressive.
On a different matter. If the match was a dire as people are
saying, it doesn't exactly encourage me to make the journey and
return to Portman Road when restrictions are eased and it is
permitted once again to do so.

I’m sorry but if Mr. Collina, widely regarded as the best
referee ever, who was known to physically react to players, can
get away with it and to be lauded by his actions, I can see
nothing wrong with Mr Drysdale’s reactions. Media hype as
always.
