Looking at twitter tonight to see this clip from Ipswich and
Northampton game. Looks like Judge said something to Drysdale
and he reacted. Surely Judge should have been sent off if that
was the case.

That really doesn’t look good at all. Images I have seen of the
incident clearly show an aggressive look on Drysdale’s face - it
is very difficult as a referee at times not to react! The
question for me is if something has been said to provoke such a
reaction, why was the player not dismissed for foul and abusive?
Unfortunately, a culture of players being allowed to get away
with appalling behaviour means dismissals for FAL are too few
and far between!

That’s the question I asked myself! I agree with what you’ve
said Mackem but there’s only a certain amount a human can take.
Players get away with a lot these days and this only goes down
to grassroots

I agree, but why not dismiss the player? Player behaviour will
only change when referees at the top level (PL and EFL) decide
to take a stand and force the authorities to act! It’s gone too
far to take the grassroots up approach they were hoping for with
the respect program and the sin bins etc.

This was quite bizarre. A very poor game which Mr Drysdale
refereed well with no questioning of his decisions, 3 or 4 YCs
all correct. Mid way during the second half, Mr Drysdale's
mannerisms changed. I would compare him to a policeman,
somewhere in Europe, who controls traffic with a whistle and
dramatic hand signals.
Judge of Ipswich went down in the box and, not getting the pen,
obviously said something that incensed Mr Drysdale. There are
close up photos on twitter of Mr Drysdale's showing, in my
opinion, some aggression and with his head almost, if not, in
contact with that of Alan Judge. If that had been two players
there would have been a red card. Players had to separate Mr
Drysdale from Judge.
Moments later another Ipswich player, Flynn Downes, was
penalised for a foul and shown a YC then theatrically a red,
presumably for what was said in his reaction. Could this be any
worse that what Judge must have said!
As I say, a bizarre end to a truly awful game of football.

I only operated as high as National League, but there is
absolutely an expectation that players aren't sent off for
OFFINABUS. After all, how many top level players are sent off
for that offence? Is that right, no it isn't, but it would need
intervention starting at the top level to fix it.
What people forget though is that referees are human beings.
What Darren has done here doesn't look good, I totally accept
that, but we don't know what his state of mind was like. What
had happened earlier in the game, but also had he experienced
problems at work earlier in the day, has he had family problems,
any bad news, etc. No one knows, and whilst a player behaving
like this towards a referee would barely get any press, the
other way round it is big news and totally unacceptable.
I will openly admit that on a small number of occasions I
reacted on the pitch to situations far from professionally, and
it was always when I was annoyed for another reason. I'm pretty
sure they were always midweek games where I'd done a full day at
work, and for me that is just human nature. If you've had a row
with a supplier, customer, your manager, or generally been
distracted, just a few hours before kick off it will be
difficult for that to be completely removed from your mind. The
top level referees don't have that excuse (although they could
still have personal issues), but those at L1 and below certainly
do.

I’m no referee “sympathiser” nor do I know Mr Drysdale from
Adam. I’ve already seen enough on Twitter, however, to know this
Is going to explode. For example, Sky Sports have already
“tweeted” it.
Perspective Is needed. If a player had done what the referee did
and got sent off there would be uproar and rightfully so. It
wasn’t that bad.
The fact it is a referee makes it’s unusual and so increased
scrutiny and impending social media hyperbole. Until, or indeed
if, anything comes out in the open we may never know what
triggered this.
Referees, players (including Premier League millionaires) etc
are all human. We all have that point when things can get on top
of us and in that split second can lose the control of our
emotions.
There may well be some mitigating factors that caused Mr
Drysdale to react as he did tonight but then again there may not
be. One thing is for sure though, in the next couple of days he
will be scrutinised and publicised by both the traditional and
social media.
Complete guess but say he has referred 1,000 games at various
levels in his career - for him to be officiating at the level he
is I would say there’s a decent chance this is the only time
something like this has happened.
I hope he gets the support he will need over the coming days,
weeks and months.

Well Judge has a point.... looks a penalty to me.... the
reaction from the referee is unacceptable.

I understand that point of view however IMO that reaction is
totally unacceptable as a referee you simply can't react in a
physically aggressive manner. It looks awful when players have
to intervene between a referee and a player like that. I have
sympathy for the referee as I'm sure he deeply regrets what was
a momentary lapse in judgement and a human reaction but I can't
defend or condone his actions.
In the same breath though players behaviour towards referees is,
in general, appalling. Comparisons with rugby are always drawn
in these incidents and I think that until, like in that sport,
the authorities allow for referees to properly apply sanctions
for players inappropriate behaviour towards them nothing will
improve.
