For me, Atkinson looked across, realised she input was a waste
of time, and had no choice but to give the goal
Combined with her error at West brom few weeks ago, lets hope
she returns to top form asap

Yes, he had no option but to award a goal in the absence of a
flag. He was not in a position to judge it himself (not that I
would expect him to be in the normal course of play) so has to
go with the AR.

Ultimately onside was the correct call, so, no harm done other
than a wake up call to stay alert, esp in the pen area

The fact that ARs are instructed not to flag when VAR is in use
is probably more to blame than anything else.
With the number of games coming thick and fast and the vast
majority coming under the jurisdiction of VAR, I can well
understand that a mistake would be made, especially as there was
a PL team playing in the match.
Had the game been at Chelsea, then VAR would have been in use,
Chelsea may well have got the penalty in the first half and the
goal they did score would have been allowed anyway.

Absolutely not. I was just curious where in the rules it gives
information about this specific incident. Even the very helpful
guides at the back don’t show this scenario but people just
assume the rule

Disagree 100%. She was 5/6 yards behind play, it was nothing
to do with or without VAR
Regardless pf the technology, there is no, and I stress, no,
excuse or reason for being incorrectly positioned

VAR or not VAR could be used as a safety net for the rectitude
of the decision, the judgement
Var or not VAR is irrelevant to the positioning of the AR.
She might or might not get the call right with or without var
Only she though can assure she is in the correct place to call
it
5 6 yard behind play, in the pen area, attacking move, at 0-0
far less any score, is inexcusable for top flight, never mind
one of the elite of that group.

Its clear in the rules, as has already been pointed
out.....closer to the goal line than the ball ......to be closer
to the goal line than the ball, you would be in front of it....
If you are not in front of it. ( behind the ball as you
posted), then you cannot be offside
This does confuse beginners when you try explain how you can be
called offside for a pass which is not played forward, however
those occasions are rare

I believe (dangerous word!) that this is the oldest element of
the Offside Law in Association Football. Before the
introduction of any of the more recent qualifications and
complications (two defenders, in one's own half, not
interfering, wearing a long t-shirt ;) etc.) it was as simple
as being in front of the ball meant being offside. Remembering
that the same applies in Rugby Union and that both sports have
the same origin.
The position of the ball represented a virtual demarcation
between the two teams and to be ahead of the ball was to be:
"Off of one's side"; which was soon concatenated to "Offside"

Good job it wasn't you in the dressing room then, unless you are
Martin Atkinson. Getting livid with people for making errors
rarely in my experience, either in football officiating or
professionally, helps people to become better performers. I am
sure that Martin Atkinson was entirely positive in trying to
help his AR to improve, not glossing over errors but neither
diminishing his colleague. If there is any SG1 referee who
usually maintains his sang-froid, it is Martin Atkinson. One of
the reasons he has enjoyed a pretty stellar career no doubt.

of time, and had no choice but to give the goal

Disagree 100%. She was 5/6 yards behind play, it was nothing
to do with or without VAR
Regardless pf the technology, there is no, and I stress, no,
excuse or reason for being incorrectly positioned
That is the duty of the AR, to be in line with the second last
defender...

All human beings make errors no matter how good they are or at
what level they are at and i am sure she will be gutted that her
positioning wasnt the best in this case.
She is not the first nor will she be the last. I am sure she
will learn from this.
In recent years sian has been one of the best ar’s in the
premier league.
The AR is given one role positionally, Stay in line with
second last defender during open play
To be 6 yards out, at the only goal of the game, so far out of
position the referee looked over and was all at sea, is not
acceptable.
It was not even an unexpected quick break or a unexpected
defensive error, it was a routine bog standard attack
Got away with one, as, by chance, the goal was valid
As referee, I would be livid in the dressing room afterwards,
regardless of her previous ( until West Brom two weeks ago? )
excellent performances.
Its hypothetical as no error occurred
But that same situation in the WC, from an AR 6 yards behind
play, we are all coming home
Doll that up however you wish......
Your ambition ruined, not thro judgement error, but, inexcusable
positioning.
Am sure it make for a funny story to tell the grandkids one
day.........
