No according to the thread Masey was. At least ten yards
behind play
I then stated she is 5/6 yards behind play
The goal is onside.
There is no reference in the thread to the goal being ten, or
six, yards offside

Can someone please enlighten me as to where in the rules it says
you need to be behind the ball to be onside?

Closer to the goal line than the ball and the second last
defender.
The goal scorer was not ahead of the ball, ie, the ball was
nearer to the goal line than him
The direction of the pass is immaterial, its possible to be
offside at a ball which is passed backwards
But yes, if you are behind the ball, then, the ball is closer to
the goal line than you,

I cannot quite do that, but it does say that to be in an offside
position you need to be nearer the opponent's goal-line than the
ball.

Offside position
It is not an offence to be in an offside position.
A player is in an offside position if:
• any part of the head, body or feet is in the opponents’
half (excluding the
halfway line) and
• any part of the head, body or feet is nearer to the
opponents’ goal line than
both the ball and the second-last opponent
The hands and arms of all players, including the goalkeepers,
are not
considered.
A player is not in an offside position if level with the:
• second-last opponent or
• last two opponents
There we are regarding the ball.

Many thanks.
Not very clear though. Maybe it should be a separate part of the
rule

I didn't see the game last night but have just caught it all on
iPlayer and read all the comments on this thread. My thoughts
are as follows.
Yes, Chelsea should have been awarded a penalty kick for the
foul on Abrahams but I can see why Mr. Atkinson thought the
defender had won the ball. At normal speed, I thought he had
too. I'm confident VAR would have corrected that error had it
been available.
As for the goal, definitely not offside but I'm disappointed
that a PL Assistant was caught so badly out of position behind
play, especially in a game where VAR was unable to come to her
rescue had she wrongly indicated offside. Did Mrs. Massey-Ellis
make an excellent decision albeit from a bad position or did she
go on a gut feeling? Short of asking her, we shall probably
never know.

For me, Atkinson looked across, realised she input was a waste
of time, and had no choice but to give the goal
Combined with her error at West brom few weeks ago, lets hope
she returns to top form asap

With over 1000 poss, can we assume you have been officiating
without understanding offside, even in its written form,
nevermind practical?

Yes, he had no option but to award a goal in the absence of a
flag. He was not in a position to judge it himself (not that I
would expect him to be in the normal course of play) so has to
go with the AR.
