It was still a foul though. Unfortunately players feel the need
to do this, but referees have to take some of the blame as if
they stay on their feet it often isn't given.
I suppose that is true, Dias was certainly unwise to actually
make a pull on the arm, however tentative that pull might be and
give both Salah the opportunity to appear to have been pole-axed
and give the referee a decision to make. On the other hand a
push on Foden in the penalty area was just as much a foul though
the fall less accomplished - do we set the threshold for giving
a foul on the action itself or on the apparent reaction?
Overall I thought this was a balanced performance by Mr Oliver.

MO handled the game well overall. But IMO both penalties are
dubious. I said it last week he is too quick to whistle and
doesn’t give himself any thinking time.
IMO also once the foul on salah is given I can’t see why a red
card cannot be given. Salah has a clear shot on goal

Another example of what was being discussed on another tread
last week. It was a bit of arm contact, certainly. But the
reaction of Salah was simply an attempt to influence the
referee. The way he threw his legs out and dived headfirst was
laughable.
The only way to get rid of this nonsense from the game is to let
the dive 'trump' the foul and to punish the Salahs of this
world. No penalty, yellow card, free kick to the opponents.
Problem solved overnight!

We may not like Salah's detestable theatrics but it doesn't
negate the original foul.
Smiled when I read this in the DM ratings:
"Michael Oliver – 7
One of those rare days when it was impossible to find a fault
with the official. On the spot for both penalties and allowed
the game to flow"
Makes a change for the Mail, although Taylor also got a good
rating recently too.
I do wonder sometimes if we try and nit-pick with referee
performances. Probably I've been guilty in the past of this,
but apart possibly from 1 YC that might have been given, I
really couldn't find anything to be really critical of with
Oliver yesterday. It's not always been the case but credit
where credit's due. He managed the game well and I liked the
calm way he handled the YC for Thiago and the injury to the City
player so early in the game.

Definitely, I agree. I am certainly guilty of nit-picking, I
often make posts about how the current laws and applications
have missed the bigger picture of fairness in the outcome of the
match and yet yesterday there I was complaining about a missed
yellow card that really had no influence at all on the game or
the result. Sometimes its hard to keep the big picture in mind!

If the DM gave MO 7/10 and added: "One of those rare days when
it was impossible to find a fault with the official. On the spot
for both penalties and allowed the game to flow" it does beg the
question as to what a referee needs to to to get a higher mark
from that estimable newspaper rag?

Believe me, 5, 5.5 or 6 is often the norm for the Mail! The
more up-market Telegraph gave him 8! Of the players, my
namesake (not my son or grandson I might add) by comparison got
9.

Agreed, SPA with no attempt to play the ball yellow card
correct.
SPA when a penalty is awarded is no longer a yellow card
offence. Mr Oliver must have deemed it a reckless tackle.

It doesn't. But I am arguing that it should. It is probably
the only way we will eradicate the endemic cheating (for that's
what it is) from the game at top level. Players are using these
theatrical dives to influence referees, especially where VAR is
used as replays will award penalties for even minimal and
irrelevant contact. As an esteemed member of this forum said
last week, football is not a non-contact sport.
I don't blame Oliver, or anyone else in a similar position, for
giving these decisions as that is what they are told to do.
It's the whole ethos of the game that needs to change.
