Dean made an error. I feel he misinterpreted intent, probably
an example of knowing the rules but not the game. It is correct
that the red card was rescinded but it doesn't resolve the
matter. Dean's correct decision would have been to penalise
Mitrovic for an attempt to deceive him. The panel should have
had the authority to impose a 3 game ban on Mitrovic for his
cheating. He caused the whole charade and gets off scot free.
You must a different lotg book tp the rest of planet earth
Mine, on violent conduct, makes no reference to intent.
Leggy doesn't say the LOTG do mention intent.

wording of the Law with regards to violent conduct:

> Violent conduct is when a player uses or attempts to use
excessive force or brutality against an opponent when not
challenging for the ball, or against a team-mate, team official,
match official, spectator or any other person, regardless of
whether contact is made.

or face with the hand or arm, is guilty of violent conduct

to apply, intent is required. My view is that the requirement
for this paragraph is not met as I am not satisfied that
Mitrovic was deliberately struck. It doesn't seem to me that Mr
Dean had no other option.

today's Daily Telegraph. He also says, "The time is long
overdue for Mike Dean and Lee Mason to step down as referees
following their hapless double act when adjudicating on West Ham
United's Tomas Soucek," which seems a tad harsh and rather
smacks of someone with an agenda.

Hackett should have stepped down when he ruined a Fourth
Division match at Stockport in December 1985, although he
claimed he "couldn't remember it" when asked about it on
Twitter...

As usual, Hackett spewing more irrational bile when commenting.
Perhaps instead of suggesting some referees should be binned, he
should in fact be “retired” in making comments in the media.

I cannot believe what I am reading on here.
A senior Referee and his family receive death threats....I'll
say that last bit again..DEATH THREATS but still people continue
to slag him off and some correspondents claim that they are
bogus, an attempt to distract attention from the decision
even.
I think there have been only 2 or 3 posts condemning the
threats.
No Referee deserves to he threatened and their family even less
so for mistakes..not deliberate acts.
Can I ask some correspondents if they think they ought to
reconsider their response to the appalling actions publicised
today

Phil, your original post about the death threats got 7 likes and
Dublin Ref's post got numerous 'agree' and 'like' condemning the
deplorable death threats.
bmb did likewise.
Sometimes, there's not a lot one can add having agreed with
another's post.
I absolutely condemn the appalling threats. That doesn't mean
we can't discuss why a referee by general consent got a decision
wrong and what other options he had.

thought Graham Scott was the VAR at Old Trafford and Lee Mason
was fourth official. So unless this was changed it seems harsh
to split the duo of Dean and Mason up after one incorrect error
from them as a double team. I actually think Lee Mason is one
of the worst at being VAR but feel he shouldn't be blamed for
recommending a review of the Souchek challenge
>

You are correct re old trafford, but dean was var and mason on
field in soton v villa when neither mason on field nor dean in
var Deemed cash had handled in the area after the ball allegedly
brushed cash thigh first. Var didnt recommend a Screen review
either. Think if a penalty had resulted, a red card for dogso
would have followed.
Think the latter is why the dreaded duo phrase comes to peoples
mind.
Mr dean has have been involved in 3 controversial incidents in a
week, whether you think he made the correct decisions or not. I
think he is right to ask for a week off even if there hadnt been
death threats, the workload top
Officials have been through (appointments official also to
blameother than schedules) is excessive and they must all be
mentally and physically shot. I think mr dean is one of the best
referees in the country and has had a good season on the whole.
Personally i hate the slow motion replays or stills which can
imply something has happened that hasnt.
Death threats are abhorrent and should not be tolerated
whatsoever. I hope the perpetrators are caught and dealt with as
harshly as possible.
Abuse of people on social media etc should NOT be TOLERATED.
My thoughts with mr dean and his family.

the premise that if antics fooled him, that its only him to
blame, is frankly bizarre. I agree that referees have ultimate
accountability for their decisions but players must have
ultimate accountability for their actions. The player that
decides to grab his face and roll on the ground after the
slightest contact did something that was deliberate, dishonest
and IMO quite malicious really as he was trying to get a fellow
opponent sent off. What Mike Dean did was none of those things,
it was an honest mistake, however bad the mistake he made, it
was an honest human error. He intended no ill will on anyone and
wasn't looking to hurt anybody. To equate an honest mistake with
a deliberate attempt to get someone sent off is, in my view,
ridiculous.
>
> I have to say I think this is all very over the top in terms
of the reaction, the red card came in second half stoppage time
and the card has been rescinded so the effect of the card has
been essentially nothing at all. I sincerely hope that Mike Dean
is back in the premier league soon and that the death threats
his family have received won't cause them too much harm. After
20+ years in the PL I'm sure Dean must be thinking on some
level, ' is this all worth it?' and frankly, I think he deserves
a lot better than to be facing those thoughts and I hope he
decides to carry on. My best wishes to him and his family.

Since he joined the site, I have formed a high opinion of
DublinRef's posts: perceptive, mature, well-reasoned and clearly
expressed, without being in any way sanctimonious. This one, a
model of the genre, merely serves to reinforce my admiration.

JCFC thank you, I appreciate those kind comments. It goes
without saying that your contributions demonstrate those virtues
and many more in abundance. I'm sure everyone that posts on here
hopes that their comments are well received and considering the
number of posters on here far more esteemed than me, I thank you
sincerely for taking the time to let me know you enjoy some of
my posts, its a great lift during these trying times.

Do we really all need to individually associate ourselves with
the condemnation of death threats? I had just assumed we were
all of one mind on this.

Sending someone death threats is the lowest of the low - after
all, at the end of the day, it is only a game. That being said,
i fear these people will evade justice due to the continued use
of fake profiles, twitter trolls and other means.
This brings everything back to this ongoing debate re. the state
of the professional game and why many see the game to have
"gone".
For this there are two entities that are most culpable: IFAB
(mainly Elleray and his crew) who continue to mess about with
the LOTG that no-one knows what it means from one week to the
next. This is taking us down a path where I believe soon, there
will be no turning back. I think it was Scott Parker who said
last week that players will no longer be required to wear
shinpads as tackling will be banned. I fear that future is
coming quite quickly.
I have never been a fan of Elleray anyway - I find him to be a
selfish arrogant soul, and this was quite clear in the brief
seconds I was stood in his presence at a RA meeting one night.
He wasn't a great referee either IMO but that's a different
issue...
Second, are the administrators (of professional leagues) - in
terms of England, the PL taking charge of refereeing in the top
divisions since 2001 has been a disaster and the FA are too soft
when it comes to punishments, as I think they are scared of what
the PL might do - breakaway leagues etc.
The PL needs to be brought back into the FA system and the FA
needs someone with a bit of bottle to get the professional game
back in line. More needs to be done to encourage fair play on
both sides, but also a firm game. Football is at its best when
both teams are going head to head to win, tackles flying in etc.
I think there is a place for technology in the game but not as
it stands at the moment, and not being used the way it is

Riley needs to retire too..........he was a poor referee and
even poorer administrator
