That isn't how it really works. In Europe on field reviews
hardly ever result in the original result standing, and after
Graham Scott went to the monitor and stuck with his original
decision I suspect PL referees have been told to go with VAR.
It is a difficult message otherwise, you have an SG1 referee
saying it is a red card but the on pitch referee thinks he is
       wrong.

When is it acceptable to lift you are outwards, above your
shoulder and strike an opponent with your elbow? Duty of care is
surely of paramount importance here. A USA referees briefing
from just a few years back defines deliberate force when your
arm is out from your body, above the shoulder and makes contact
with the face of an opponent. Nothing about outcome, or injury
to the other player. The guidance is (or was) such that what we
saw tonight was a red card back then in the USA. Indeed, many
years earlier, it was proposed that any elbow into an opponent's
face is an automatic red card. What became of that I do not
know, but at what point do you say actions like this is
dangerous - up to the point that someone is actually hurt?
Players should have a duty of care and while the sending off may
be seen as erroneous, such an action could so easily have hurt
someone. Why do players put there arms up and out especially
       above their shoulders?

       1. They are obviously operating VAR differently on the
       continent.
       2. P Walton explained how the VAR operates - that the decision
ultimately lies with the referee. If they can’t make up their
own mind or are scared of overruling their own counterparts then
       they’re in the wrong profession!

Come on mate! It’s barely a touch. He goes down like he’s been

shouldn’t be playacting trying to get people sent off!!!!

I agree AJB, it’s the players here that need to stop all the
gamesmanship and rolling around feigning injury. The games
become farcical because no one ever puts any responsibility on
the players and the PFA. It’s always the refs fault 🥴

       This exactly.
The vast majority of the punters who shout loudly barely know
the LOTG exist let alone what is in them. Look at the absolute
rubbish flying Pawson's way for a correct decision last week -
says it all about the validity of what the Punters opinion
       means!

I think in UEFA competitions referees do feel more comfortable
going against the recommendations of the VAR. I have no evidence
other than it has happened more often than in the PL and that's
with more accurate VAR interventions on the whole in Europe IMO.
Scott and Marriner have gone against the VAR this season so I'm
not saying its an explicit policy that they can't but I think
one has to get the impression there is a strong expectation from
the PGMOL that referees will follow VAR advice. Dean isn't the
first referee who has looked unhappy after returning from an
       OFR...

If only Graham Scott or Andre Marriner were refereeing - rightly
or wrongly, at least they weren’t compelled to back VAR because
it’s what Riley wants to happen! Mason needs to retire, his
refereeing is poor at best and clearly VAR isn’t a role suited
       to him either!

Anyone with an ounce of feeling for the game would have looked
at the monitor, cancelled the red card and shown a yellow to
       Mitrovic.
"isn't how it works" ???? I'm fed up with how it works. Premier
League games are barely worth watching now.
VAR was meant to help out the overstretched on-field officials.
Instead it's just providing two SG referees a chance to
adversely influence a game instead of the previous one.
But above all I'm fed up with the cheating. The lily-livered
administrators are making no attempt to deal with it and the
compliant referees don't want to rock the boat - they're doing
very nicely thank you out of this pathetic charade.

Football, at the highest level, is now a different game to what
we all started watching. The Club World Cup is showing the way
it is going. Hopefully the punters will stop going and start to
switch off and go back down to the lower levels, when we can
resume spectating, where the game we grew to love still gets
       played
       [/quote]
Conversely Dean could have a cr** game ( and he has in his last
2 matches) and some folk on this site will still praise him to
the skies and find either excuses or others to blame, in this
       case Lee Mason.
