Reminded me a little of when Taylor sent off Martial for that
little tap on the face (but no sanction against the provocateur)
in the United v Spurs game.
The decision, presumably for VC, was deemed correct by many on
here, so I'm slightly reluctant to be critical of Dean. As you
say, perhaps it met some criteria or dictat.

All these people on here blaming Mason is baffling! The VAR
recommends a OFR. The decision ultimately lies with the onfield
       official.
2 big errors: one by Mike Dean to send him off and 1 by Mitrovic
who’s pathetic rolling around and theatrics have forced the
referee into making a decision. Mike Dean can’t help himself can
       he??
This is the problem with players cheating and the administrators
doing nothing about it!! Until the authorities get a grip with
this and referees stop giving silly free kicks for the smallest
bit of contact then the game will continue down this awful sorry
       path!

When a referee goes to the monitor I feel as they will side with
the VAR. I can only recall two occasions this season where a
referee has gone to the monitor and stuck to his original
Decison. Graham Scott in the spurs v Brighton game and Andre
Marriner in the Fulham v Liverpool game. All in all i think both
Mason and Dean have had bad weeks both on the field and in the
       VAR booth.

I've just had this very conversation with a West Ham pal of
mine. If Martial and Mitrovic don't fall over then there is no
decision to make. Dean public enemy number one with all the
pundits, but they don't say anything about their ex mates
       cheating and conning referees.
However, we as referees have to take some of the blame as how
many times do we get told "no surprises" or "if (s)he doesn't go
down I'm not giving a penalty" if we are an AR

Dean could have a perfect game, and twitter followers would
slate him. They start before the game kicks off.
Football, at the highest level, is now a different game to what
we all started watching. The Club World Cup is showing the way
it is going. Hopefully the punters will stop going and start to
switch off and go back down to the lower levels, when we can
resume spectating, where the game we grew to love still gets
       played

Mike Dean did appear to say I have no option, but he did. He is
the referee and he should have enough bottle after going to the
screen to say VAR is wrong. Is it not time to show Lee Mason the
door, he is not good enough.

“ Premier League confirm ultimately Mike Dean felt that it was
violent conduct with the elbow to Mitrovic, subjective decision
that he went to look at.
       It’s a game of opinions.
In this case Mike Dean’s differs with most watchers!”
Not sure the Premier League are helping themselves coming out
with things like this. Doesn’t help Mike Dean moving forward as
will have players and managers and fans questioning every
decision he makes even with 99% of them being correct

It’s either take the easy way out, swallow the pride and go with
the decision that VAR is telling you about and let the FA deal
with it when the club inevitably appeals - or throw your
colleagues under the bus by not siding with them.
