No, indeed not it would appear. I think one of the gentlemen is
in the the three initials before the surname group who, if it be
he, I saw lose any vestige of control in a very violent match at
Cambridge Utd in the mid 1970s. I wonder if he was the generous
getter in of rounds or the erroneous over-ruler of flag signals
? The other chap I shall have to think on more to discover his
identity

No, wait a moment JCFC. If the village is Bramley near Guildford
and the longstanding referee from there is a bricklaying referee
then actually I think you have "cottoned" on to exactly the
right person. Now which is which? Who the generous alcoholic
benefactor and who the putter of linos in their place ? Care to
let us into the secret AT ?

I was thinking that it was one of your spoonerables. There are a
number of Google references to apples in Great Bookham, but then
I did not know of the village of Bramley, so you are probably
correct.

I believe so and therefore Mr Lewis is entirely blameless on
both counts.

I never sought to cast any aspersions in the direction of Mr
Lewis and was probably incorrect in thinking of Mr Bigger.

I apologise for misunderstanding your post JCFC. I always
thought Ray Bigger was from Norfolk, as indeed he was for the
latter part of his Football League career but trusty Upton
informs me that his FL career started at Croydon. No compass
point given for Croydon unlike the three initialled gentleman
sharing his given name with a "very naughty boy" who Upton lists
as coming from a more geographically specific part of Croydon.

No apology needed - my posts are, I admit, sometimes quite
Delphic. I too have had a look at Upton and was surprised that
Mr Bigger lasted for six seasons, so is unlikely to be AT's man.
The Camberley inhabitant you suggest does seem the likely answer
- but as you say, which was which?

Unless AT tells us, we shall never know. I shall have to believe
both things, potentially, of both gentlemen.

Glad I've been able to brighten up a drab grey weekend for some
of you. Malcolm Sinclair, Ray Lewis and Ray Biggar (a good
Surrey colleague in the 1970s) are indeed blameless. I will keep
the suspense going a little longer and say that the
drinks-buyer's last game on the FL was also the last game in the
FL for one of the participating clubs, although they have since
returned to the fold and are doing quite well at present. The
hater-of-linesmen was himself a linesman when he witnessed what
must rank as one of the biggest punch-ups ever seen at Wembley,
and that at a so-called charitable affray, sorry affair! ;D

Thank you AT. I do like a bit of research. I think I know where
I need to look but whether I can find the source material is
another matter. I am sure JCFC will be on the case as well and I
fully expect him to prevail.
