Bill was my idol when I was at school! He was the economics
teacher in the 6th form & all the girls at school, bar me
absolutely fancied him! I was the envy of many a 6th former as
I'd stroll up to him & give him a hug and kiss ;D I still keep
in touch with him today & he's just as lovely although often
tells me I am still a bratt!! You knew my maths teacher!! Funny
man, I was the only kid in school who liked him! I think that
was down to a bond over refereeing. We speak occasionally. I
remember Ron, he allocated Bill & Graham to look out for me as
they knew me from school. I wonder if we ever met at a RA
meeting there? If there was ever a bratty teenage girl at one of
the meetings you went to that would have been me! I was all over
the local papers when I qualified because I was the youngest
female to ever qualify at that time, a record I held for many
years! I'd been qualified almost a year before I was old enough
to referee a game, no mini football back then.
I forgot Craig Pawson - sorry Craig! He was also always there
for bmb jr, still is as a friendly ear for teenage boy woes!

'Milf' certainly had a way about him. Even as an assessor he was
very flamboyant almost theatrical - didnt make him wrong, just
different
If you want a quiet, unfùssy, v efficient referee I have the
greatest admiration for Brian Curson, a wonderful man to be
around. Had a very positive influence on my career.

No need for tin hats. It's a great thing that the refereeing
fraternity and sorority is and always has been made up of such a
variety of characters and styles and therefore there is such a
wide disparity of role models. Something to suit most people. As
you might be able to deduce from my earlier picks of Ron
Challis, Joe Worrall and Andre Marriner, Roger Milford would
just about be at the bottom of my list of referees to emulate
but marvellous that he inspired you in your refereeing career.
I do entirely agree with you in saying that refereeing now is
not as enjoyable as once it was because it seems the authorities
require referees to eliminate personality rather than use it in
pursuit of good officiating.
I wouldn't use him as a role model but one current referee I've
seen two or three times ( and someone who comes in for a fair
bit of stick on this site ) who really does seem to let his
personality shine through in his refereeing is Brett Huxtable. I
may add that each time I have seen him he has had a very good
match. Perhaps my presence is a lucky charm for his refereeing.
So many current referees, particularly the younger ones, all
look pretty much the same and officiate in a similar standard
manner so if I am asked, having been to a match, who the referee
was I would have to think hard to come up with a name as they
all merge into an identikit an hour or so after the match is
over.

Well being primarily involved in GAA I would have to cite David
Coldrick and Barry Kelly as two refereeing idols. (Very much the
Collina's of their respective codes IMO)
In terms of soccer - Neil Doyle and Alan Kelly are two Irish
referees I think many could aspire to, Kelly in particular has
had a very illustrious international career and later in the
MLS.
On English referees Mark Clattenburg is by a long way the most
naturally talented referee I have seen live, at times I felt he
had an incredible grasp, reading and understanding of the game
allowing him to have unparalleled control of the tempo of a
match and of the players involved.
Mike Dean I think is the best decision maker I have seen, the
best traditional style referee there is - a foul is a foul, a
yellow is a yellow, a red is a red. Its simple, maybe lacks
nuance sometimes but incredible accurate.
I have a lot of admiration for Andre Marriner too, I've heard a
number of managers, players referees speak highly of him as a
person which is more important of course than his refereeing -
which is also excellent, better at controlling a game from the
background than anyone in the PL.
In UEFA refereeing Cunyet Cakir I think has been one of the best
referees in history, he represents everything in terms of soft
skills I think a modern referee should have as well being
incredibly brave in his decisions, going against VAR
recommendations at the most important moments, not taking the
easy out, on more than one occasion. His image of calm in a sea
of chaos alone is deeply impressive IMO.
Honourable mentions would go to Damir Skomina - just an
excellent all rounder in my opinion, Craig Pawson - Always felt
he has a fantastic calm manner but never shirks the big calls
and finally Bakary Gassama - I saw a clip once of him refereeing
in his domestic premier league, with the greatest of respect
considering the level and the conditions of the pitch for him to
make it to two WC and other international tournaments is a huge
achievement.
Sorry Whistleblower if I've exceeded the number of referees
allowed ;D

I'm also on the Roger Milford front. I can remember seeing him
referee on TV and he was almost certainly the reason I got into
refereeing. I do realise now that his style of refereeing was
way too much on being pally with the players, but at the time
that impressed me and inspired me to qualify.

Clive Wilkes was another referee who quietly got in with his job
- has a very dry sense of humour
Colin Webster made you feel part of his team and that he was
there in the "bunker" with you (something I tried to bring to my
games)
Alan Wiley was possibly the nicest, warmest referee i worked
with. The players loved his style, never skirked a big decision.
Conversely I also worked with Steve Baines, whose idea of the
game was that it was about him. I had the audacity to indicate a
free kick near me. At the next throw in he gave indication that
it was to be be an offensive throw, even though I believed he
was wrong he was adamant in his body language. As I went with
him, he whistled, gave it the other (correct) way, gave me a
thumbs up and a smile! When i got back to the benches on of the
coaches patted me on thr shoulder and said "he f**king stitched
u up there, we saw it, just do your job lad"
So maybe I did learn as much from him, as I vowed that would
never happen to an assistant of mine
