Premier League Trial Games

Maybe a bit premature but I was just wondering if anyone who
regularly watches championship football would have any ideas on
who deserves a trial game in the PL this season with the view to
possible promotion for the 21/22 season. Just looking at
appointments, comments on here and the occasional highlights I
would think the following might be in with a chance?
- Jarred Gillett
- John Brooks
- Tim Robinson
- Tony Harrington
Also on a related note - I think the only SG2 official to be
used as VAR this season is Gillett? I understand that he has
vast experience in this area relative to other referees but I
think previously Bond, Brooks and Robinson had acted as VAR for
PL games. Seems a poor decision from a progression planning
point of view to not occasionally appoint SG1 prospects as VAR.

.................. not to mention that they would probably do
it better than the present useless incumbents.

I am a regular watcher of Championship football as a Cardiff
season ticket holder. I personally think that Tim Robinson and
Jarred Gillett are the two best referee’s in the league in my
opinion. They both have a good rapport with the players and have
a good skill of keeping the game flowing as much as possible. I
also think they both look very calm and experienced at this
level and would be very comfortable in the Premier league.
However, judging by this season’s appointments it looks like
John Brooks may be next in line. I haven’t been particularly
impressed with him in the games I have seen, I find him to be a
no nonsense style referee who does not really like engaging with
the players, sometimes I feel he goes to his pocket a little too
much which sets a very low precedent for the game and then
things can get a little out of control. But having said that, he
does seem a solid referee, it’s just I prefer the styles of
Robinson and Gillett.
Robinson had a trial game before Christmas last season but his
appointments don’t seem to be as good as some of the others you
list this season.

I noticed that Mr Brooks had dished out a couple of red cards
recently, no idea of their merits. In his earlier days
refereeing, he seemed inclined towards leniency, letting a few
bad challenges pass without sanction, but from tomp's
observations, it sounds he may have moved too far in the
opposite direction

For trial games to be meaningful, there has to be a place(s)
available on the SG1 list. Anyone got any ideas how many places
might be coming available on SG1? - that might give an idea of
how many refs might be given a trial game as a chance.

Some very valid points there tomp
I have always felt Robinson to be a bit officious and bordering
on arrogance but when he was one of the 4 SG2 refs appointed to
VAR duties, coupled with the trial game you mentioned, I
expected him to get promoted though wouldn’t have been my
choice. As you say his star seems to have dimmed this season.
Gillet has a good track record from Australia, always looks the
real deal to me and I am sure will get promoted at some stage.
If so it will be on merit
Brooks seems to be a bit of a golden boy; not that long ago that
he was running the PL line so his is a swift rise up the ranks.
Only early to mid 30s I believe and I get the impression he is
being fast tracked for the PL. Wouldn’t be surprised to see him
on FIFA within 5 years at most. Whether he merits it is another
matter as he never impresses me but who am i to know
Harrington is as interesting case. Seems to have gone under the
radar until the last 12 or so months when he has got some
excellent appointments so clearly impressing the right people. I
haven’t seen much of him to comment fully. Interestingly a ref
who rarely if ever attracts controversy.
Incidentally you seem to have omitted to mention Ollie Langford
😂😂......or Andy Davies 😱

From what I’ve seen of Harrington, he’s definitely got a chance
of promotion at some point. I’ve seen him in some testing games
too such as derby matches including Cardiff v Swansea and
Cardiff V Bristol City. He’s always held his own but like you
say Hendo Brooks seems to be the “golden boy” haha.
On another note, I saw Josh Smith earlier in the season in the
Cardiff V Luton game. Not the most challenging of matches but
really liked his style of officiating. Considering this is is
first season in the championship and only his second in the efl
I was really impressed. He’s only 27 too so he’s definitely one
to watch out for in regards to promotion in a couple of seasons.
I believe he’s injured at the moment though!!

I think I am right in saying that Brooks has had the same
Assistants with him in almost every game this season- is that a
sign of the hierarchy's thinking. No other SG2 has.

I believe Gillett has had Hodskinson and Dermott with him for
the majority of his matches as well. Fingers crossed for him in
taking the next step up, it would be a big first for a
non-english referee to take charge of a Premier League game.
