Red card remains on the player's record, it's just the
suspension which has been rescinded, so no he's not ;)

I agree with your last point Phil. As to the intervention by
VAR, do we know whether Scott was raising doubts about the
penalty decision or was getting Dean to check whether there was
any attempt to play the ball so that a RC would follow? As I
recall, Dean had given no indication to show a card when
awarding the penalty but presumably was waiting for VAR knowing
it would be reviewed anyway.
What did strike me as odd was when the tv camera showed Dean
looking at the monitor was that it appeared to be a still
picture from 1 angle which wasn't the best. I wonder what was
said in the exchange. Frustrating as I assume BT will have
heard Scott's comments but didn't let on what they were as far
as I know.

As previously stated, my sympathies are with Southampton on this
one. There seemed to be minimal if any contact, and imo Mike
Dean should have gone back on his decision to award MU a penalty
after looking in detail at the monitor. The decision to rescind
the red card is in my view sensible.

Are we to assume the decision to rescind the red card was on the
basis that the penalty decision was incorrect? Or is it more
nuanced than that? If, as suggested by ARF above, the RC stays
on the record, is the panel not contesting the penalty but
saying the punishment of a suspension didn't fit the crime?

There's is an incongruity here. If there was contact that
caused Martial to go down, the penalty decision and red card
were correct as it was a clear goal scoring opportunity and
there was no attempt to play the ball. If there was no contact
the penalty decision, and therefore the red card, were wrong.
In that case Martial should be charged with successfully
deceiving a match official, which he hasn't been. The only
alternative I can see to these scenarios is that Martial simply
fell over, which I don't think anyone believes.

Being devil's advocate here but could it have been interpreted
as an 'accidental' coming-together where there was contact,
which the defender was trying to avoid, but was neither a foul
nor a dive? Personally, I would have preferred Dean to have
viewed it in that light and just waved played on - no foul, but
no attempt to deceive the referee for a YC. I actually thought
there was contact with the knee and possibly with the arm, but
enough to justify a foul?

The cynic in me and a friend of mine who played, coached and
officiated in the oval ball game in the north thinks
Even an accidental coming together at old trafford is a definite
penalty especially if it is in the home teams favour, even at
6-0 up.
I have the greatest respect for mike dean and think he is
probably the best official in the country but this was not his
finest moment.

Whilst we all remain annoyed by the appalling and absolutely
disgusting death threats against Mike Dean and his family I
thought we could do with a smile to remind us of the funny
moments in football.
In an effort to bring the standard of the NBI up to the same
standard as the PL, the MLSZ have introduced new training aids
for players, pitches that are made for diving!
