I have to agree with you bmb, there is no place for things like
this in any sport.
Sadly, in recent times we have heard of the threats sent to
Michael and Lucy Oliver after Michael's decision in the
Champions League and now we have this ridiculous state of
affairs which are a sad reflection on the society in which we
live.
I also wish Mike and his family all the best and thank him for
his long contribution to football throughout his career.

Remember when Howard Webb's family were attacked during Euro
2008 by Polish fans, and that was when Social Media was very
much in the early stages.
People in this country have no morals or any self-discipline,
and they are able to hide behind fake profiles and online
trolls, as they are too cowardly to speak in public or debate
properly. I am all for free speech, but one must remember that
all actions have consequences. And people ought to be held
accountable for what they say.
Social media giants need to be held accountable for this too!

It is really easy to fix, make it mandatory to provide a scan of
passport, driving license, or other official ID when registering
for a social media site. Or it they are children and don't have
such ID, a parent has to provide theirs. Of course the issue is
it needs to be a global effort otherwise people will just put a
VPN on and sign up in a country that doesn't have such
requirements. Plus people will complain it is an erosion of
their civil liberties.
That said, other countries police it much better than most
Western countries. Posting anything even vaguely controversial
on social media in China, assuming you can bypass the
restrictions, isn't likely to be beneficial to your freedom or
even potentially health. Even leaving a dodgy hotel review can
land you in prison in the middle east.
