Very interesting post Ref Fan Neutrality is a very nuanced
concept. Even in matches where I have no real allegiance to
either team, there is usually one who I would prefer to win
because of various circumstances. In yesterday's good match
between Man Utd and Liverpool I found myself being genuinely
neutral and I wouldn't always have been concerning those two
Clubs playing each other in the past. I really had no preference
as to who won and who lost. The only thing I hoped for, which
happened, is that it wouldn't be decided by penalties.
You make a good point about a FA Cup Final without a crowd which
is still a very real possibility I would say. I am sure you are
right that in those circumstances they wouldn't give it to a
first-timer. Mike Dean would be an extremely worthy recipient of
the honour of joining the Second Timers Club but I doubt it
would happen. It could be Martin Atkinson but most likely
Michael Oliver, so as to keep a sort of parity with Anthony
Taylor ( last year's officiant ), the two English UEFA Elite
Category Referees.
