ball in the United penalty area and suffered head injuries and
the ball had been cleared and was in Burnley's possession 25
yards out when play was halted. The players were treated and
quickly back on their feet, however, play was restarted with a
drop ball for the United keeper. Have they changed this since
the start of the season and I missed it because play should have
restarted with a drop ball to a Burnley player if the
interpretation is stilll the same.

Yes because the injuries happened in the penalty area and
anything that happens within the Pa is now a dropped ball to the
defending keeper.
That's not exactly accurate - it's a dropped ball to the
goalkeeper if the ball was in the penalty area or the last touch
was in the penalty area, otherwise it's a dropped ball to the
team who last touched the ball at the point they last touched
it.

> Agreed Dave. One of the poorest displays I’ve seen friend do
in a while. I can see why friend has “missed” it - from his
position it looks like a 50-50 which is what I thought at the
time. The replays slowed down always make it look worse. Shaw
just gets a touch on the ball which I think saves him. I think
they have got the decision just about right.

He pushed Pieters in the back before he even left the ground and
then had his arms over the top of him.
Believe me, Burnley very, very rarely get any favours from Kevin
Friend, not that we expect favours ---just fairness.
Ashington - i respect you and your wisdom. IMO Maguire jumps
fairly and wins the header, the Burnley defender doesn’t jump.
Maguire has to put his hands somewhere for leverage and that
means his hand comes on his back.
Look at the reaction of Peieters- he doesn’t even appeal for it,
which shows to me that even he didn’t think it was a foul
No problem, however, he pushed him in the back before he even
jumped and several Burnley players did appeal and correctly so
---as was proved by the all-seeing, always 100% correct VAR
decision. UNited did their usual best to referee the game,
however, Mr Friend was wise to some of their tricks.
I have to admit that I am just hoping that they may suspend the
season because of the virus because it is getting tiresome
watching the Premier League sniper turning up at all the grounds
and doing so much damage to so many players. The two games I
watched tonight had players going down when barely touched and
they have only one objective in mind.
They used to call it something which I am not prepared to say in
previous years and I don't like it at all.
I suppose we will just have to leave it as two posters with
differing opinions.
I agree regarding the state of football as you have said many
times on here which I have also many times agreed with. Albeit i
did think Burnley were equally as guilty of the theatrics
perhaps more so tonight, despite dyche’s repeated claims on the
topic.
Despite the terrible ongoing situation i do hope some sort of
football continues just for my own sanity!
ajb --yes differing opinions as far as us two are concerned,
however, as I have said many times, it is not our opinion that
matters, it is that of the 6 people involved in officiating a PL
match these days --surely they couldn't all be wrong? lol
As far as the theatrics are concerned, please not that I did not
single out any one team or player because there are so many at
it, perhaps Burnley have been instructed "if you can't beat 'em
then join 'em"
Whatever, I do not like to see a player getting an arm brushed
against his chest or shoulder in normal contact and he goes down
clutching his face and rolling around, I am surprised that they
manage to get up and complete the game. I definitely would have
loved to see some of them play in the old Southern League in the
1970s when I was involved. I can imagine the reaction of both
players and officials to a lot of their histrionics.
I have recently watched feeds of one or two Under 23 games and
Youth games and the sniper seems to be attending one or two of
their games too, although there are not as many instances so
perhaps he/she is an apprentice learning the trade and is not a
marksman yet.
I hope that you manage to retain your sanity and can watch what
you can, I am not a selfish person!
Roll on the Super League and the NRL so that I can get a release
from the quest for oscars. It certainly doesn't seem that there
will be an early chance to attend any live football.
In the meantime, good luck to all officials because the job
isn't getting any easier!

On the key incidents, I felt that Brady's foul was a DOGSO
offence, initially I thought yellow like Mr. Friend but on
replay the Burnley defender was further behind play than I
thought. I would be interested to hear the VAR conversation, did
they call Friend over because they felt he had missed a DOGSO
offence but that this offence was mitigated by a foul beforehand
by Shaw, or did they think it was mitigated by a red card
offence by Shaw. In my view Shaw's foul was worthy of a red
card, the contact point as relatively high, it was with the
studs and there was significant enough speed at the point of
collision. I was surprised that Friend didn't issue a red card,
this is an inexcusable mistake with the incident being viewed on
the monitor. The interesting thing that I would like to know is
whether Friend went against VAR advising a red card or did VAR
simply advice it was a foul that made the DOGSO offence mute.
On the disallowed goal I thought it was pretty clear cut,
Maguire has definitely gained an advantage by his hand being on
the defenders back, pretty simple push FK call and a good call
by Friend and the VAR imo.

It was said in commentary last night that VAR had completed
their check on a possible red card by Shaw.
They then thought Brady's challenge was a red for OGSO but felt
Shaw tackle was in APP.
A bit of an odd one from Man Utd's perspective - it would have
been in their interests for VAR to agree with Friend that
Brady's challenge was only yellow in which case Man Utd get
free-kick on edge of area and Burnley player is booked, whereas
VAR thinking it was a red card challenge means Burnley free-kick
on edge of other area and Man Utd player booked instead!
Presumably Friend could have disagreed whit Attwell at the
monitor and decided to show Shaw a red card anyway.

However the Premier League explanation of VAR says that APP
applies to "...a phase of play that leads to a goal or
penalty...". In this instance they were looking at a DOGSO not a
goal or penalty.

Precisely the point i was trying to make earlier on in the
thread.
I can ustand if for example two fouls occur very close together
that red could be over turned.
Ie if man utd player that brady entangled with had handled in
the seconds before brady committed the foul, but missed by
onfield referee.
Edited to fix quote thingamajigga, bmb.

Gallagher on sky thought yellow for Shaw and red for Brady.
Halsey also thought this on Twitter. Both also thought maguire’s
goal should have stood

Well that is wrong then! As per the VAR protocol, it also
applies to a red card for DOGSO (but not for Serious Foul Play
or Violent Conduct.)
of course what all this essentially means is Kevin Friend got
two decisions wrong in about 20 seconds which isn't great.

Actually, Halsey thought the Shaw challenge should have been a
RC. While he personally felt the Maguire goal should have
stood, he argued it was very subjective and understood why VAR
didn't intervene as it wasn't a clear and obvious error. If
Gallagher said YC for Shaw was correct, then on this occasion I
agree with him that a YC wasn't wrong. Perhaps of the orange
variety, but the fact that Shaw did get part of the ball and
also that the force of the impact was exacerbated by both
players going for the ball at pace from different directions for
me made Yellow acceptable. There was an element of coming
together. If the Burnley player had been static, then it would
be a different scenario, and I do fully accept that getting the
ball doesn't mean it can't be RC.
