edy, I recall that the reason Alan Wiley never made F.I.F.A. 15
years or so ago was due to age. I seem to recall there was an
age limit of 39. Does that still apply?
Pawson will be 42 in March I believe and Tierney was 40 on
Christmas Day. As has been mentioned, Kavanagh is several years
younger - 36 I think.
Once appointed to the International List, is there an age
(official or otherwise) when a referee would not be promoted to
the Elite Group?
Taylor was 38/39 and Oliver 32/33 if I'm not mistaken and both
had been F.I.F.A. for some 4 or 5 years before reaching Elite.
With that in mind, is Kavanagh perhaps the only realistic
prospect of the present group to make Elite?

Tierney is still 2nd Group. So obviously a promotion to 1st is
the next step.
UEFA tends to promote referees under 40 to the Elite Group. The
only exception was Del Cerro Grande who was promoted at 42.
As for Kavanagh, I agree. He is the only realistic chance for
the Elite Group. But my question is: after him, who?

The other factor is that we only have one Fifa spot left.... and
with England and Jones the most likely candidates... it’s a coin
toss and we could end up with the likes of Tierney or Pawson
“blocking” a decent official getting a white badge before they
can get to challenge elite.

Moss in 2015 comes to mind for example, thought it would have
been clattenburg at the time however he was appointed a year
later.

When/if they are ready for the FIFA list I think Tierney should
be removed, Pawson IMO has had a very good international career
and will continue to I'm sure for his remaining 3/4/5 years on
the list. Tierney has had 1 EL group game, no nations league
matches and is still in the second group without any games this
season so to get to a similar level as even Pawson will take
some time and at his age I wonder how interested UEFA will be in
progressing him in this manner. The same could be said of Atwell
but he is two years younger so maybe has some more hope but I'm
not so sure UEFA have much interest in him either given his
appointments.
Tierney and Atwell are used regularly as VARs but with the new
video referee list with FIFA I don't believe they need to be
FIFA referees to act as VARs in international games.

Yes, that was one of the biggest surprises, unless one had an
inkling of the 'politics' which were already being played out in
the FA.
Going back many years, the appointment of Derek Nippard in 1978
( the year of Ipswich's triumph I cannot resist pointing out ! )
was a very major surprise as most people assumed the honour was
going to John Gow who was in his last season and was not
disbarred by geography.
The appointments of Roger Milford and Jeff Winter raised some
eyebrows at the time.
Now it appears it is far harder for a SG1 referee not to be
appointed to the Final than to be so.

It's an interesting point about whether Tierney and Attwell
should make room for Jones and England. I think removing Tierney
and Attwell is very hard on them but it does seem fairly clear
that neither of them is going to have much of an international
career.
Other nations seem to find talent at a very young age and
nurture it into a FIFA badge at about the age of 30. However,
this can backfire as was the case with Attwell's first
incarnation into FIFA. I think certain influential people saw in
Attwell much more potential than there actually was.
Who is there in England, already in their mid 20s, and really
impressing people? I don't know their ages but the names I have
heard spoken of very well are Doughty, Edwards and Donohue.

I think for me, UEFA clearly see Tierney and Attwell as VAR
officials. With this now being a separate section on the list,
and not exclusively for FIFA refs, it would make sense to remove
their badge to allow Jones and England to step up if they see
both as future international referees.
In terms of beyond that, I think the names you have mentioned
are a good shout. Speedie and Barrot both got an FA Cup 3rd
round tie which must be a good sign. Also Will Finnie had a
decent game at the weekend in my opinion in what was a very
challenging game to officiate. Maybe he’s one to watch?

I saw Will Finnie at Gresty Road in what must have been one of
his first games on the list and I thought he had a good game.
Looked just like a schoolboy alongside adults, but his control
of the game was good.
