Good point! However, I still do not think international rank
holds that much sway in the league - Atkinson and Dean still get
big matches despite both no longer being international referees,
and Dean never got into the top category. Likewise, Alan Wiley
who never made it onto FIFA got plenty of important matches.
Thinking about it again, I think they are simply trying to
spread out the biggest games among a larger group of referees
       than they have previously.

I have a feeling that Riley wants to test Tierney for a possible
promotion on June. It's not a secret that UEFA is interested in
domestic performances apart from the International ones. I know
that Tierney had no appointment in Europe this season but that
       doesn't mean anything.

Great game for Tierney, great to see big games shared more
evenly. think he may being lined up for a cup final this year.
Dont think the villa fans will be happy getting Moss at the
Etihad next week, both he and Friend are not on
The villa park faithful’s xmas card list.

I think he will get the Carabao Cup final whereas Kavanagh or
Atwell will get the FA Cup final

I would be very surprised if the FA Cup Final ( if we are back
to relative normality by then and they choose someone who has
not had the honour before ) goes to anyone else but Craig
Pawson. Mind you, that appointment has certainly thrown up many
       surprises in the past.

Just curious Edy why it doesn't mean anything, would it be
common for this to occur in other countries? I'm just used to
seeing all of the English FIFA referees regularly appointed.

edy, I recall that the reason Alan Wiley never made F.I.F.A. 15
years or so ago was due to age. I seem to recall there was an
age limit of 39. Does that still apply?
Pawson will be 42 in March I believe and Tierney was 40 on
Christmas Day. As has been mentioned, Kavanagh is several years
       younger - 36 I think.
Once appointed to the International List, is there an age
(official or otherwise) when a referee would not be promoted to
       the Elite Group?
Taylor was 38/39 and Oliver 32/33 if I'm not mistaken and both
had been F.I.F.A. for some 4 or 5 years before reaching Elite.
With that in mind, is Kavanagh perhaps the only realistic
prospect of the present group to make Elite?

Not sure about other promotions but they don't promote to the
elite group over age 40 because of the time needed to develop on
the elite group ahead of major tournaments.

The Leeds v Southampton game on 20th Jan is not taking place as
Southampton's FA Cup 3rd round match with Shrewsbury has been
rescheduled for Tuesday 19th. Wonder if Simon Hooper will get
that appointment or if Graham Scott will get the fixture as he
was originally named as the referee and Hooper would maybe get
West Ham vs West Brom instead
