       Harrogate V Carlisle

So Harrogate will are currently very unhappy with tonight's
Referee having passed the ground before kick off to abandoning
       after 10 minutes.
What makes them so unhappy is the fact that they went 1-0 up
       after a minute.
A few people commenting on twitter not happy at all saying it
was an awful decision to start the game.

It would seem incredibly strange for a safe pitch to become
unsafe after just 10 minutes play - sounds like a bit of a boo
       boo!

Must have had input from the very inexperienced 4th official
       (😏😋😆)

According to the Harrogate Advertiser, the pitch was deemed
playable at 17:00, and was still fine at kick-off.

Once you clear the snow and the temperature drops, you increase
the risk of it feezing. Would not take too many areas to become
       slippy before you stop it.
Sometimes you have to look ahead and wonder whether you will
finish, not just whether you can start.
I have been in both camps where I have played a game when in all
honesty we were never going to finish and also where I have
taken flack for calling a game off at 5pm because all the
indicators were that we would not finish. Plus you do have to
take into account people getting home after the game

I've called off games when the pitch has been borderline
playable an hour before kick off, purely on the basis that if it
is borderline after the sun has gone down it simply isn't going
to get any better as the temperature drops (relating to cold
weather rather than rain). It causes arguments as the clubs say
the pitch is playable, but I once got a phone call from a home
chairman to apologise as he'd gone from the clubhouse onto the
pitch after 9pm and it was frozen solid, whereas it was just a
       bit crunchy two hours earlier.
It's the same for a 3pm winter kick off as well, if it is frozen
at 2pm it just isn't going to defrost in time, and even if it
does it is likely going to freeze again before the game can be
       finished.
I've seen a video of this one tonight where a goal kick hits the
ground and bounces so high it was as if it had hit concrete, no
way you can play on that.

This must be one of the quickest abandonments ever at this
level. I recall Steve Lodge abandoning a game after a similar
period but don't have the details. Gary Willard abandoned an FA
Cup tie at Nottingham Forest after 15 minutes due to snow which
only began to fall after KO, and his actions were widely
praised. And, another for ISOR, the Blackburn v Palace game on
1st Feb 1969 was abandoned by Doug Fieldsend after 18 minutes
due to rain and mud. Was there not a game at St Austell 2-3
years ago which was abandoned after less than a minute?

I wasn't aware of that but Stephen Lodge abandoned a league
match between Grimsby and Sunderland in December 1993.
All six minutes of the match is on YouTube:

Yes, that's the one, and it's good that this farce was recorded
for posterity. Seriously, although things obviously got worse in
the 5-6 minutes in which play was possible, there was no way the
match should have started, with conditions on the nearside being
unplayable from the start. A classic and thanks SuffolkRef for
       locating it.
