Michael Oliver - Arsenal v Chelsea

Hypothetical question I wondered if anyone could answer.
Towards the end of the game while Chelsea were looking for goals
they got a corner. At the time the corner was taken, there was a
second ball on the field of play near the touch line about
halfway inside the arsenal half. If the ball had gone in the net
would the goal have been ruled out for 2 balls on the field of
play? I believe the ball stayed there until all the players
moved back towards the half way line for the goal kick but it
was as far as I can tell always say in the same position until
after the corner was complete and the goal kick about to be
taken.

Good morning from Italy, I hope you all had a happy Christmas.
Last night I watched part of the match won by Arsenal, refereed
by Oliver. I haven't seen him in action for a while, maybe a few
months. I noticed that he has increased his physical presence,
he looks taller, longer, it is possible that he has taken care
of his body by training in the gym. It also seems to me that he
has slightly modified his running style and his posture, gaining
width and strength by making better use of the movement of his
arms. Is it only my impression? My compliments to Oliver, he has
reached a very high level of athletic performance, undoubtedly
at the top in Europe. I am not talking about the other aspects
because they are already excellent.

Play would only be stopped if the second ball interfered with
play, in this case it was nowhere near the active play so had a
goal been scored it would have stood.

Would be interested in what everyone thought of the first
penalty. Gary Neville was adamant is was not a penalty, I
thought it was at first, but subsequent replays made it look
less of a penalty. However, as it was not a clear and obvious
error so Tierney was right to not overturn the decision.
Second penalty was a straightforward decision.

Interesting. If anything, I was the opposite. Not sure on
first viewing, but on replays at full speed and slo-mo it looked
to me the attacker was clearly clipped on the back of his heel.
I was surprised at Neville's comment. He seemed to be disputing
there was any contact. I certainly didn't expect VAR to advise
an OFR. How much contact was difficult to tell but unless I
missed it, there seemed to be little dissent from Chelsea
players.

What Neville was saying was that there was contact but the
attacker initiated it, which I personally agreed with. No way
it could be deemed a clear and obvious error though so VAR was
never going to overrule it.

Contact definitely initiated by the attacker Tierney onto the
defender James. On the 4th or 5th replay that should have been
overturned, it is just not a penalty!

But the fact that, as you say, it took 4 or 5 replays, means it
really can't be classed as a clear and obvious error.

The Arsenal penalty seems to have split opinion so I was quite
surprised watching the Football Show on Sky yesterday that
Dermot Gallagher and the two regular reporters/fans all agreed
it was a correct decision, as did Mark Halsey on twitter. With
the reputation some players have acquired, I do wonder if
sometimes we can look too closely for any sign of an attacker
initiating contact. Personally, I'm still not convinced that
was the case here so was happy with the penalty decision. And
as was commented, Oliver's positioning couldn't have been better
- for both penalties.
Incidentally, Dermot agreed with the penalty to Leeds for the
foul by the Burnley goalkeeper, but didn't get support from the
other two!
