Lee Mason - Burnley v Wolves

A shocking attack from the Wolves manager after the game on Lee
Mason stating that he doesn’t have the qualities to referee in
the Premier League and that he has told him he doesn’t want to
see him refereeing his team again...

It'll never happen but I would love him to be able to reply that
Nuno Espirito Santo 'doesn't have the quality' to be a Premier
League manager!
This is why they won't let me have a referee managerial
position! I'd cause utter carnage by answering back 8)

Times today suggests that "it was hard to find reason for such
frustration... Wolves offered little throughout". Dyche also
apparently tapped his watch in front of Lee Mason at the final
whistle, Lee having played more than the allotted 5 mins added
time.
Times also quotes David Moyes, "referee got a bundle of things
wrong" (Chris Kavanagh, Chelsea v W Ham). "I don't know if the
Bowen goal was wrongly disallowed, I just thought the level
wasn't very good".
So not a good night for referees in managers' eyes at least. Can
anyone offer a less blinkered view on the proceedings at Burnley
and Chelsea?

I think Nuno has proved he does, though.
Regardless of how accurate or ill-advised his comments were,
Nuno is only repeating what’s often been posted on here about
Lee Mason.
His appointments also suggest a lack of faith in him by the
PGMOL.

It seems clear from the interview that Nuno has a general
problem with Mason's abilities. There was not a particular key
match decision made wrongly against Wolves yesterday as far as I
can see and he made reference to previous games Mason has been
in charge of - I don't especially remember him saying something
similar about an individual referee before.
I don't believe it's unreasonable to ask if some SG1 referees
are good enough now to be there (although you could ask if a
public interview like that is the best platform to do it.)
It seems Nuno was unhappy at Mason being appointed to a Wolves
game and I would say that whilst any referee is on the Premier
League then no individual Premier League team should be able to
exclude them just from their games for 'not being good enough',
because if you're not good enough to referee Wolves why are you
good enough to referee Fulham or Newcastle or which ever other
team you wish to pick.

I see no problem with what he said. He has not questioned Lee
Mason's integrity just his ability. He doesn't appear to have
thrown his toys out the pram on the basis of one decision. He
has offered an opinion to which he is entitled and even backed
it up with comments about match control. If the FA took action
against him it would just be an attempt at censorship.

I thought Nuno's comments were probably unfair speaking both
generally and based on the game last night, I wouldn't go so far
to call them egregious or disgraceful as he does not question
the referees integrity.
Saying that I think he is totally wrong in his opinion, I
watched the Wolves game last night and can't recall Mason doing
anything particularly wrong, looked a competent performance to
me (I stand to be corrected on that as I wasn't watching the
game that carefully for the full 90 minutes).
On the West Ham game, with a similar proviso as above, I thought
Kavanagh also performed well, I guess in both cases losing
managers are generally not happy (and I'm not sure Moyes ever
is).
More generally I think Lee Mason has been refereeing quite well
for a season or two now, maybe someone will remind me but I
can't recall him making any particularly bad mistakes in recent
times and I also don't recall him being corrected by VAR on that
many occasions (again to be clear, I don't watch every game
Mason officiates, I'm just basing that off what I have seen as a
lack of comment generally on his performances both on here and
in news media).
I tend to think Mason has developed into a steady safe pair of
hands in the PL, not one of the best for sure but I think there
are a good number of referees, including some FIFA officials,
who have had worse seasons than him so far.

I agree dublinref. Obviously I cannot comment on last nights
game as I didn’t see it. I do feel sorry for Lee Mason who like
with a couple of other referees has been treated shockingly in
recent seasons/
As you say very few mistakes, very little controversy on here
and yet he’s done half as many games as Oliver Atkinson et al.
He’s had only 6 games this season. He’s been a PL referee for
nearly 15 years so must have been doing something right!
Yes I don’t think he’s ever going to be the best ref in the
world but equally I don’t think he’s ever been the worst. He
should be used much more!

As a Burnley fan, but also an avid supporter of officials, I
thought that Lee Mason refereed very well last night and the
only real controversial item was whether or not Moutinho stamped
on Josh Brownhill in the closing minutes, VAR deemed that he
didn't and Moutinho did not receive a card of any colour.
This smacks to me of a manager trying to deflect form the fact
that his team had 64% possession, 15 attempts on goal with 3 on
target and scored 1 goals which was not enough to overcome their
lowly opponentsand had nothing to do with Lee Mason.
The only other game in which Lee Mason has refereed Wolves this
season was against Newcastle where, again, they had 63%
possession, 16 attempts on goal with 3 on target but managed a
1-1 draw against opponents who had 5 shots with 2 on target.
That apart, Lee Mason ony refereed them once last season,
against Villa in the FA Cup,a game in which he fielded a very
much changed team and who lost, having only 29% possession. In
these 3 matches only one Wolves player has been cautioned and
that was last night.
The only other games in which Lee Mason refereed were in 2018/19
season against Watford, which they lost and Everton which they
won.
Jose is an expert at deflection tactics, perhaps it is something
which Portuguese managers learn, however, I do not like it and
can see no reason why Nuno should say what he did last night,
particularly after his team had been beaten fairly and squarely.
Someone mentioned about Dyche pointing at his watch because the
game had gone well over the 5 minutes added time. This is not
something new because Sean is always well aware of the time and
has a lovely watch to keep track. If you listen to his after
match interview he stresses that the referee and 2 managers are
under the most pressure in a match and does not offer any
criticism of Lee Mason at all.
