I have to disagree totally on this one.. For me it's not a
penalty and it's a dive from Wilson. Very poor refereeing once
again from Graham Scott. Have to agree with the Match of the
Day. Similar incident on Lookman in the first half and no
penalty. the exact same contact. Absolutely poor officiating

whatsoever. Scott gives the penalty as Wilson falls inside the
box. However, the foul is quite clearly outside the area, it's
not close. Wilson continues and springboards himself over so
that it's inside. Having looked at over 10 replays, the team of
Madley & Scott, instead of looking for the key element of
whether it was inside or outside, decide it's a red card for
Andersen for DOGSO.
>
> The red card is probably right, it probably is a clear chance
for Wilson to shoot and maybe score, but the decision to give a
penalty and to not book Wilson for his dive afterwards for the
imaginary second phase contact is ludicrous to say the least. A
joke.

The foul started outside but continued into the penalty area,
yet again you are criticising a referee without actually
understanding the law. I initially thought they were checking
whether it was inside or out, but they were actually checking
whether it should be DOGSO as they had already and quickly
concluded there was contact inside. Once you get to that point
it can only be a red card as there was zero attempt to play the
ball.
Absolutely correct decision, although Scott going to his back
pocket only to then go back and have another look didn't look
great.

The foul started and finished outside the box, there is no
separate or related contact inside the area. Please stop
defending a horrible decision to award the penalty. There is no
trip inside the box whatsoever. Red card is correct for DOGSO.

You need to watch more closely, Anderson's foot definitely
catches Wilson's foot sole well inside the penalty area.
Whether that was enough to take him down is debatable, but once
VAR see that they can't possibly say it was a clear and obvious
error to award the penalty.

Just a question - do they distinguish between a foul
'continuing' into the area and what could in fact be 2 separate
fouls - the first outside and a second inside by the same
player?

It did look to me as though there was a holding offence outside
the penalty area followed by a very slight clip of the foot
inside the penalty area. Whilst the contact was very slight, at
high speed and with the other foot off the ground and with the
attacker's knowledge that only by falling to the ground will be
be awarded the penalty that he believes he deserves - the
outcome was inevitable. And, under the Laws and VAR protocols
of today ...... correct.
Whether we like that or not is another matter ......

I thought that the Lookman incident was different because there
was no tugging of the shirt and it was actually Lookman who made
contact by using the trick of trailing his leg to make contact
with his opponent and going down.
Another aspect which has crept into the game and with just one
thing in mind. It is nothing new that players try to con the
officials, however, it does seem to be getting worse each week.
Is this because of VAR involvement? Who knows?

Firstly, it's a dive. Plain and simple. But it seems like we
don't critisise diving anymore, as everything since VAR was
introduced is a penalty, therefore we don't blame the players
for going down. Before VAR Wilson would've been getting
pelters. Football has changed so much in such a short space of
time, and not for the better. Saying that, I don't blame Scott,
in real time it looked a pen. But slow-mo shows the foul is
outside the area. The 'clip' inside the box is on the sole of
his boot and so minimal as to be almost non-existant, nowhere
near enough to propel Wilson forward and to the ground. It's a
dive, but as I said, he knows it'll be given. Joke.
As for Scott's handling of the game as a whole, I thought he did
ok. Richard West on the other hand was abysmal. A couple of
free kicks he gave over on his side of the pitch were laughable,
even the mild mannered Scott Parker was apopylectic. West is
clearly a fella who thinks any contact whatsoever is a foul,
utterly ridiculous. Two briiliant challenges punished by his
incompetence. If things continue like this football is soon to
become unwatchable.

From any neutral person watching that, the foul started outside,
it did not carry on inside. The dive by Wilson was theatrical
but he got what he wanted. What perplexed me is that in real
time even without VAR it was clearly outside and did not
continue inside. I'm sorry but MR Scott is not upto Premier
League standard, we have seen that over the past couple of
months.

Look at the media and the pundits - diving has rarely if ever
been criticised. Too busy blaming the referee for missing it
and not the player for doing it. One reason why we now have VAR
- instead of calling out the primadonnas for their bad behavior
the narrative was always that the referee wasn't good enough.

bmb, I agree with a lot of your stuff on here, you always speak
sense, and do so with respect and integrity....but on this
occasion I have to disagree. I think there was a point when
players diving was a real hot topic, and plenty of pundits (if
you can call them that) were calling players out on it and
asking for more help for refs. It was possibly one of the major
reasons for VAR being introduced. The problem now is VAR is
almost encouraging the cheats. They are dropping like flies at
the slightest contact in the box, knowing it will be reviewed
and invariably awarded. For me the whole thing is a mess, VAR
is making decisions and still getting 50-50 split opinions on
here and everywhere else as to whether it was correct. We
really are no better off than before.
